I've heard the same thing as Heather - that all the hair that doesn't fall out while you're pregnant pretty much does all at once when your baby is about 4 months old. Was definitely that way for me. Slowed down to normal by the time my bubba was about 6 months old. I've found that my hair is much more lank post-pregnancy too *sigh* Honestly, it seems greasy just after I've washed it - I hope that's just a stage too!

Hair loss after pregnancy is called: telogen effluvium or postpartum alopecian. Hair loss is expected. With my second, after my hair stopped falling out I had little hangs around my hairline where my hair was growing back in-I felt like I looked like a little kid.

Im not sure if its hormonal but I wouldnt be surprised. I had really nice auburn hair when I had my first son and than it got darker. My Mom mentioned it to me because she really liked my auburn color and was disappointed it had darken. Now that Im done having babies Im hoping my hair goes back to normal. And if it doesnt I can still live with it!

I don't know if it's just from particular hormones, but all my family members who've had kids have had this problem, between 4-6months postpartum. Hand fulls coming out. I lost 1/2 my pony tail thickness (if that makes sense) Mine grew back fairly well but my sisters hair and my Mom's is very very thin now. They're not balding it's just thin. So who knows foresure, but it'll be ok. Mine grew back :)

hi siobhan you have such a cutie right there. anyway yes agree with my co-posters coz i'm on the same boat i had those too when i gace birth to my son. and it does looks scary to me but my mom and my doctor says too that it's normal because of our hormone. now my baby is going 2yrs old now and my hair is doing fine it's back to normal.

I'm having the same issue...but my hair is also changing colors! I'm a brunette and it's changing to auburn? could this be hormonal as well?

my doc told me that it would fall out....esp since i already had a problem with shedding before!

[deleted account]

i hear that this is pretty normal because of the hormones during pregancy. my hair started falling out after i gave birth but then it slowed down when my baby was 7 months. my hair stopped falling out around the time we weaned around 11 months. good luck.

During my pregnancy my hair didn't fall out and the hair on my legs and armpits took longer to grow! After I gave birth my hair started falling out in clumps. I took about 5 months for that aspect to go back to normal.

It is normal. I was losing a lot of hair too and it just started to calm down and my baby is 6 months old now! I had waist length hair and got sick of the shedding and my baby yanking on it that I went and chopped all off today. Im now going to donate it to locks of love! I better not shed anymore!

If you just had a baby then it is normal! Do not fret! :) During pregnancy your body goes in to awesome-hair-growing-hormone-mode, and you probably noticed your hair look thick and shiney! Now that your baby is born, that hormone is gone and you will lose all that excess hair. It's normal, and you will still have hair left when it's over. :)

If you just had your baby its normal because during pregnancy you don't shed hair like you normally would due to your bodies changes in nutritution and hormones, so after pregnancy (im not sure on a time line) your body is just getting rid of the hair it didn't shed during the nine month pregnancy duration.

Hi. My hair is falling out so much so that my husband has started to complain about the amount of hair one can find on the floor, in the shower (clean the drain daily), on pretty much everything. Its not like my house doesn't get cleaned either. I'm just literally molting. My baby is a July baby and its not as bad but still happening. My poor child ends up with hair all over his knees after crawling around for a while. Not fun!!

I had my baby Sept 25th 2009 and am exclusively breast feeding, my hair started falling out about 10 times my normal rate starting about 2 months ago and has finally started to return to normal. The same thing happen with my first child but I remember it happening after I stopped breast feeding, so I can say that with each baby it can be different

Yes, this is common. I had the same issue when my son was about 3 mths old. I ended up cutting my hair to a style where the hair loss wasn't so noticable. My son is 9 mth now and my hair is growing back in nicely.

Vitamin A can make you have hair loss. My friend was losing her hair and we got her a different vitamin that didn't have vitamin A and it stopped. My hair began to fall out so I cut it short so that it wouldn't be so much hair around the house.

Sadly my son is 7 months old now and my hair is still falling out!!! It has gotten thinner and thinner, I am going some time this week to get a hair cut. My last one was right before I had him so I am due for one.
A nurse told me to start taking my prenatal vitamins again but they make me sick...
Sorry to hear you are having the same problem, it isn't fun!!

my hair falls out a lot, like yours. i have thyroid condition that doesn't help matters either, plus my baby likes to hold onto my hair as a security blanket!

YES!! Every time I brush my hair so much comes out that I could make a decently sized toupee! I read online that it's normal around the 4th month, and that it'll start growing back on its own. I really hope that's the case, since most of my hair seems to be missing from the front. :-(

[deleted account]

Mine also. When I was washing my hair in the shower my entire hands were covered in hair. It started when I was pregnant and it recenlty has slowed down (my little one is a year old). I hope it stops soon.

I once asked a doc about hair loss (before I was pregnant) and she said that I would need to loose about 100 hairs a day to have concern. I think the hair that is falling out now is just from new hair growing.

My hair fell out in clumps. I went to the hairdresser to get it to look half decent and evened up. The lady said she could see all kinds of new growth underneath. It was awful feeling that way though when it was coming out and not knowing when it would stop.

Yup. Same thing happened to me. It's the hormones. I lost a lot of hair and it lasted almost 6 months! However, i read it's all old hair from your pregnancy days that you should have shed but didn't.

I don't have that problem, but I do remeber reading that it is common because of the changes in your hormones, the same reason why some babies hair falls out too.
