My son is 8 1/2 months old, and his doctor has decided that he probably has a milk allergy. I'm trying to decide what to do, his doctor and nurse both say that I should just switch him to a hypoallergenic formula, but I'm not sure that's what I want to do. If I continue to nurse him, I have to cut ALL milk products out of my diet, this includes pre-packaged food that containes milk products, including the proteins whey and casein. Does anyone know of a list of foods that are OK to eat, or just any advise at all. My son definately likes his nursing and won't go to sleep at night until he gets to do what he wants, so I would feel so bad taking that away from him. Like I said any info or advise would help. Thanks to all in advance!

my daughter was the same and I eliminated any and all milk from my diet it was not that hard for me and if you really think about it it is just until he weens. Even if you bf until he is four it is just a small part of his and your life that will better his life for possibly the rest of his life.

If it were me, I would get a second opinion as well. I would get intouch with a lactation consultant (can find one in your area thru local La Leche League) b/c when it comes down to the nitty gritty, doctors- even female ones who have breastfed their own children- aren't the most knowledgeable about breastfeeding as one would think.
It's true milk is the most common food allergen- and as my mom (who's a lactation consultant) says 'Humans are the only species that drinks the milk of another animal and thinks it's normal.' Our bodies just weren't designed to process cow milk.
I would try eliminating it first, for several weeks. It may be that he can tolerate it in smaller levels.
Breast is best. If you don't want to quit, then don't.

My daughter had blood in her stool too. It turned about to be fissures (tiny cracks around her anus). I collected stool for over a week (yuck!) and they tested her for intestinal problems and stomach bugs. It's kind of funny because her doctor never brought up milk allergies, I asked. She didn't think it was that. A couple weeks later at her 6 month check up her pediatrician could see the fissures. They cleared up on their own and haven't been an issue since. If his symptoms do clear up when you cut dairy just remember it's only for a short time. It does take 2-3 weeks for the milk proteins to leave your system though. So his symptoms may not improve right away. I love milk, but I was ready to do it if needed. Like Karen said breast milk is best for allergies.

Continue to nurse!! This happened to me, except I had to cut out way more than that. Breastmilk is best for allergies!!! That is so frustrating to me, people suggested that I could try that expensive formula but that makes absolutely no sense! It's hard to give up certain foods at first, but I found it easier because I was doing it for my baby. You got to cut it all out, the yogurt, cheese, cows milk. ALL DAIRY. There are plenty alternatives out there. Just DO IT!!

Thank you so much for the advice, I would absolutly LOVE to just cut out milk and ice cream, but his doctor said that if I wanted to continue to nurse I have to cut out all MILK and MILK products, I can still have dairy, just not cheese, :( sour cream and stuff like that. He made it sound like if I didn't cut all MILK products out, that it might make him have the allergy for good. If I do it his way, he said he would prob re-introduce milk at a year. Thank you all for all of your advice and support!

My son is 8 1/2 months also. Try just cutting milk out. I found that my son at 2 months was snotty all the time and was not sick, just had a runny nose. I cut milk out and he was not snotty anymore and was happier. I still have cheese or yogurt occasionally and other products that contain milk, but just less. It doesn't seem to bother him unless i have a glass of milk or a bowl of ice cream. Try doing something small before something too drastic like cutting EVERYTHING out. I love milk, but i love nursing more, and he loves it more than i do, and i would hate it if the doctors had told me to stop nursing. Let me know if this works for you. Good luck.

Thank you so much! His main symtom is diarrhea with occational blood in his stool (that you can see). The blood is why we went to the doctor, he told us to bring in a sample to see if it really was blood and it was. So that's when they said that it is "most likely a milk allergy". They did say that we could bring another sample in, in three weeks, after he hasn't had any milk products, so I think I will try the diet until then, and go from there.

What are his symptoms? Have you had a second opinion? There was a brief period where I thought my daughter had a milk allergy at 6 months. My lactation consultant said it's extremely rare for it to happen that late (although not impossible). Try cutting out dairy for a few weeks and if his symptoms don't improve then you know it's not that.
