So, I need to lose this baby weight! It's driving me crazy. When my first son was a year old I did the South Beach and lost a ton of weight and loved it! I decided to start now, thinking Protien and veggies can't hurt me and would probably do wonders for my milk. Well, this morning (day3) I woke very heavy, shakey and nauseous. I ate my normal protien breakfast, and I felt better for a little bit, but not long.

I was talking to a friend and she thinks I need carbs while breastfeeding? Anyone know if this is a bad idea right now?

I know your feeling. I could totally eat potatos ALL the time!! They are sooo my friend. But I've done that diet before and it made me all shakey and grouchy, ALL the time!! Maybe just workout a little more. Try to burn the carbs off...lol! I know your feeling. I have a 3 mth old, 3 yr old and 6 yr old. I lost the weight really quick with my older 2. This time around is proving to more difficult. Maybe find a workout buddy. Good luck to you!

Alright thanks ladies!  I just thought upping all my veggies and salads and protien we'd be fine.  I'm a carboholic and this is the only way to get me not to have cravings...I'll hav eto do some modified dieting, I guess.  Dern.

I'm a big fan of the food guide...make good choices from all the food groups. It's never a good idea to cut out any group completely unless you have to for allergy reasons. Just my opinion!

I found this on the net --

a lot of people use the words "atkins diet" as shorthand for "cutting back refined carbs". if you actually read the literature for the atkins diet (dr atkins' new diet revolution), it advises against pregnant or breastfeeding women going on the diet.

the point of the atkins diet is to put the dieter in a state of ketosis, and the ketones get into your breastmilk and could harm your baby.

if you are talking about maintaining a balanced diet with 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day and switching to healthier carbs like whole grains and brown rice, cutting back on white sugar, etc., that would be fine, but it's also not the real "atkins diet". you should definitely skip the induction portion of the diet (that's the part with no carbs) and avoid going into ketosis.

I dont think it is a good idea to cut out carbs while breastfeeding, you need to have a good diet for you and the baby, maybe find a different way of losing weight, one that will not affect your baby.
