Non-nutritive Sucking

I need a little help. My daughter turned three months old today and over the past few days she has been trying to suck on everything. Her hand, my shoulder, her pacifier....basically anything she can get into her mouth. My milk supply seems to be fine and she is feeding for her normal amount of time. Is this normal or do you think she isn't getting enough food?

Quoting Lisa:

Three months is prime for a big growth spurt. Putting your baby to your breast and allowing her to nurse as much as she wants and as often as she wants will help increase and maintain an adequate milk supply.

But concerning your question of the 'normality' of non-nutritive sucking- yes, it is normal, and very good (but best to be had at the breast rather than a pacifier or hand- sucking at the breast keeps prolactin levels high).

Damn, I need to start reading the other replied before I start replying myself.  :)  I'm just too lazy to scroll down!

3 months is a big growth spurt! She's probably trying to bring in more milk. Wait it out and it may subside (my LO just finished hers, a little early).

Or, could be teething. I'm sure she's getting enough to eat unless you've noticed a decrease in diaper output.

They just go through stages like that. Sometimes they just need the comfort of the breast, especially if they are in some pain, eg from teething, or if they're not feeling well. Sounds like she might be having some teething pain - she is quite young but sometimes it starts hurting them a long time before the teeth actually come through. You probably have plenty of milk. I don't think there is anything wrong with letting them comfort-suck, as long as your nipples are coping :)
