I have had a nasty cold for several days now, and I was wondering if there was anything nursing moms can take that is safe for the baby and won't effect milk supply? I've just been doing hot tea with honey and lemon, but that only seems to be temporary relief. Are throat lozenges safe?

I personally am a big fan of nasal irrigation, too.  Netti pot is one system.  Basically you dump a bunch of salt water through you sinuses.  It feels a little weird, but it cleans your sinuses out.

Nursing with a cold is not fun, but is actually very beneficial for your child.  Your baby is building up many immunities through that.  Throat lozenges are fine to take.

Hi Alison, i faced the same problem a couple of weeks back. I checked with my gynaec & she suggested "Kanol Plus Steam Inhalation". Kanol Plus is a green colour capsule. You should cut the capsule into half & pour its liquid into hot water & inhale the steam. It worked like magic for me!!!

While there are several medications that are fine to use with BF if you feel more comfortable going the natural route - use a saline nasal mist, try a drop of eucalyptus oil in hot water and then inhale the steam, honey and lemon like you have been doing and use natural throat lozenges such as Ricolas.

Oh yes, I love the neti pot also! I usually use it when I'm not sick because otherwise the salt seems to irritate my nasal passages for some reason. But since I started using it I get sick so much less! :)

My FIL is a Dr and told me Mucinex D, Sudafed, Afrin nasal spray (for 3 days or less)

are all safe while nursing.

I searched this exact thing the other day as I have a nasty cold!

Here is the link to what I found on kellymom.com. http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/cold...

I gargled with warm, salt water A LOT. And took 2 lozenges because I couldn't take it anymore! But the warm, salt water really helped.  I'm on Day 5 now and feel like there is no end in sight!
