Im wondering if anyone can help me out....Ive been told that your breastmilk loses nutritional value after 6months-when you are supposed to put your baby on solids. Is that true?

Im tandem feeding my 18month and 6month old girls, and dont know if what I have been told about the nutritional value of breatsmilk is true?

Who ever told you that, is ill informed. Breastmilk does not loose nutritional value after 6 months. Most children are interested in solids on their own at that time, but some aren't. You could breastfeed without supplementing with solids for the first year and have a perfectly healthy child. Breastmilk's nutritional value changes from nursing session to nursing session depending on the child's, or in your case children's, need. I suggest reading pages 339 to 349 in "The womanly art of breastfeeding" seventh edition to find out more about the nutritional value of breastmilk.

I think you've been misinformed! Breastmilk is full of nutrients and antibodies essential for your child's growth and health. Solids help with vitamins, minerals, and some calories, but solids shouldn't replace any nursings for awhile yet. They should be in addition to any breastmilk. It's the healthiest thing you can give your baby, even after the recommended six months! If you're concerned, be sure you're taking a multi-vitamin to help with iron, calcium, and other vitamins and minerals.
