I exclusively breastfeed my 10wk old little girl and these last couple of days i've had a pain down the outer edge of my left breast. It feels like it's bruised so is sore to touch or if it gets knocked or anything. I've had a good feel and there doesn't seem to be any lumps from blocked ducts. Amelia's had several really good long feeds on it and it's not helped at all/ Any ideas what it can be?

I've had that same feeling many times with this baby and it's always been a blocked duct. I would nurse and nurse on that side...pump and pump...take hot showers. If I didn't catch the blocked duct soon enough, it always turned to mastitis...it feels like the flu with LOTS of aches. I was always able to get mine to clear up with lots of nursing though. Hang in there and Good luck!!

This sounds just like me, I have thrush in my right breast. I was in the same boat loads of people kept saying that there was nothing wrong, including the 1st Dr I saw, I knew I didn't have blocked ducts, or mastitis as I've had both before. If you feel fererish it could be mastitis but if it's just sore it could be thrush! Suggest it to your Dr, there are things you can take for it.
I also pump exclusively on that side, I feed her on my left and pump on the right so my little girl doesn't irritate it any more!
Good Luck, hope it eases soon! x

If you are feverish, it may be mastitis, call your doctor and they can call in a prescription for you. If you have a clogged duct, warm compresses, nurse on that side first every time (if it's too painful to nurse, make sure to pump often). Try nursing every two hours - whatever you do don't stop nursing or pumping, you have to get the milk out. You can take tylenol for pain, try pumping in a warm bath - all sorts of good ways to make you feel better!

Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice, no i'm not wearing wired bras and haven't done sime I was about 20weeks pregnant. I don't feel engorged, so i'll give them pumping and massaging a try!

It sounds like a clogged milk duct. Are you wearing a bra with a wire? Don't wear a wire for a few days, when your daughter nurses this side point her nose toward the pain and put warm compresses on the spot that hurts. Good luck and if it persists past 2 days see your OBGYN or lactation consultant.

I think it sounds clogged. Mine did not always have a lump when they got clogged. I would use a heating pad before a feeding and massage the spot while feeding. It took about a day and the clog went away. Do not let it turn into mastitis. That hurts, you will now the spot will get red and you will feel like you have the flu.

I've had that off and on with my 5 month old. mine was always a clogged duct (didn't always feel like a lump in there). I found the best way to unclog it was to take a warm (or hot) shower and "milk" it. rub your thumb and fingers down that side (even though it hurts) and try to get the milk out, usually there will be a hard white piece (tiny as it is) that caused the clog. something else I've done is to start nursing on that side every time instead of switching. make sure once you get it unclogged (if that's what it ends up being) that you either pump it out or hand press it out for quite a while to get most of the milk out so it doesn't get infected or re-clog.

have you tried pumping? Sometimes that helps. Mine get sore like that when I am too full and pumping it all out helps. Also try some warm compresses
