Painful Nursing Habit, 6months+

So I was browsing the photo gallery and I see that no ones baby is grabbing boob, at least not squishing it down and getting a tight little fist flesh. So I'm just wondering if anyones babies like to kneed at the breast while their nursing, how hard and how do you get them to stop? My little Alexis grabs a fist of skin and claws and kneeds...i actually have a bruise from it. I tried getting her to cuddle her racoon puppet at night and that's helped, but most of the time she likes to dig her claws into my skin. It's starting to put me off nursing (i'm not giving up yet though, not even close!)
I want to enjoy nursing again, but she's so violent! Help!

I don't have many answers, but Claire my bubs is doing a similar thing. She likes to play with my nipple and drag it out or clamp and twist (very painful). She is 5 months and hasn't any teeth yet and I'm worried that when she does get teeth it will be excruciating. She also scratches and pulls my nose whilst feeding. Lovely isn't it. I try pulling her off and re attaching when she twists my nipple but mostly she does it when she isn't overly hungry or at the end of a feed and I think it is more of a play thing so I'm trying to pull her off straight away.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I'll have to find/make myself one of those nursing necklaces. I'll also try what Sinead said about taking her hand away. Hope it works!

My daughter does this...but it doesn't hurt. Hmmmm I guess I have numb boobs, lol. Or floppy saggy raisin boobs.

I second the nursing necklace suggestion. Just keep removing her hand and say no that hurts mommy ouch. Remove her when she does and when she really wants back on you can latch her on again.

My daughter does this type of thing (but not so hard!) she digs her nails in and squeezes, otherwise she has a chunk of my hair she is pulling on. She just finds if comforting..... I like Sinead's suggestion of a nursing necklace, anything else that can occupy that little hand sounds good to me!

some people use "nursing necklaces" which have all sorts of interesting things dangling down to distract baby. I hold one of my baby's hands and try and gently trap the other under my arm. You could also try putting mitttens or socks on her hands. When Ciara grabs me and digs her sharp little fingernails in I take her hand away and tell her "no", frown at her and make her have a minute or two off the boob to reinforce that it's not a nice thing to do.
