Howdy All! I have a 6week old baby girl that I am breastfeeding, I was looking into birthcontrols and was leaning more toward an "IUD" there are two different kinds/types, "ParaGard" or the "Mirena". I am leaning more for the ParaGard It is good up to 10 years (you can take it out at anytime) BUT it has NO hormons..that way it doesnt effect the breast milk.

I was just wondering if any of you out there have experience with the IUDs? Do you preffer it, yes no?

Hope to hear from you =)

I just read that paraguard is only 85% so for 100 women using it a year 25 end up pregnant. They are thinking about lawsuit about this method

I have had the Paragard for 3 months now. I am not liking it right now. I have cramps and feeling tired all the time, long long periods or spotting seems like since last month I haven't stopped. I feel out of sorts. I went on it because they told me that I will have preclampsia with every pregnancy each one getting worse than the last so I chose it. I know this is part of it and hopefully will end me back on schedule but for right now I feel out sorts everyday. Did anyone else feel this way at first?? My two children are 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 yrs old. So I didn't get it right after I had my last one.

Hello Tamara,
After my daughter was born in 2001 (she was my third) I chose the ParaGard. I have a blood disorder so anything else was out of the question....

Over all the ParaGard was good. With the ParaGard my periods were heavier and cramps were harder, My periods before ParaGard were light w/ very little to no cramping, so it took a while to get used to.

The ParaGard is SUPPOSED to be good for 10years BUT mine started giving me problems at year 7. My periods started getting longer and longer and then one month I started and after the second week I contacted the doctor, he said everything was good but after the 4th week of nonstop bleeding, we decided to take it out. By the next day the bleeding was over and I was back to schedule.

Other than this I did enjoy this type of contraception. A little over a year after it was removed I conceived Liam (my fourth) so all is well and I would say go for it. :)

Oh and not sure what your doctor has said BUT my doctor made it mandatory (in hid office) to do a quick in office ultrasound after the insertion to make sure it was in place and not tilted :)

Hope all goes well :)

I had my IUD placed minutes after delivering my son. (My Dr was doing a study that I chose to participate in.) I've had NO problems with it, I don't even notice that its there. No cramping, I may have had spotting, but who knows? lol I had just given birth. To me, its nice to not ever have to think abot birth control. I wasn't sure that I'd remember to take a pill with a newborn, and I'm allergic to latex, so this was an easy way to go for me. I have the Mirena

I have had the Mirena since Feb. 4th. It made me cramp the first day. I didn't bleed at all the first week, but after that I have been spotting ever since which is really annoying. It hasn't affect my breastmilk at all. So I do like it but the spotting is the only bad part for me.

yeah go with the paraguard, hormone based contraceptives can lead to a whole heap of health problems later on. I have a non hormone iud and i love it, my periods didnt get any heavier and its great to not have to think about it.

I have a Mirena. The hormone is progesterone only (and it's a VERY tiny amount), not estrogen, so it doesn't affect the breastmilk. I am glad I got it.

However, you should decide pretty soon... I'm not sure if the paraguard is the same way, but with the Mirena I had to have it inserted before my baby was 8 weeks, or else they would have to wait until I had my first period to put it in. I'm not sure why that is the case, but that is what I was told.

I have had the paragard for 5 months now and no problems! I love it! I wanted something hormone-free because I used to get migraines from the pill. The biggest issue I've heard of is heavy, painful periods may occur in the beginning as your body adjusts. But for me, I haven't had that issue at all...no period whatsoever yet! But I'm sure that is more to do with breastfeeding than anything else.
