Part time breastfeeding

I've heard moms say they only breastfeed once a week or that they work a lot and just marathon breastfeed when they are home. I am curious about this part time breastfeeding. Does it meet the child's nutritional needs for milk (and the child would need no other milk supplelment?) or is it just about comfort?

I've also read that Kathy Detwyler (breastfeeding expert) had a son that she continued nursing for a long time even AFTER her milk dried up. Any other moms out there do that?

about nursing when milk dries outa; I nursed my son throughout my second pregnancy and at 5 months preggo my milk disappeard completely, almost over night...he just nursed right along not caring that nothing was comming out...you'll find out that nursing is more thatn nutrition...its very emotional and comforting for the baby too. No experience with part time nursing, but I have a friend whos daughter was born the same day as my son, and she breastfed when she could and gave formula when she couldnt breastfeed. She eventually stopped breastfeeding altogether when the baby was 6 months...but you do what works for you and your baby.
