Ok...So I've eaten peanut butter all my life with no problems but I'm breast feeding. I heard this morning that it could cause my son to have an allergy. Is there any truth to that? I've researched on the internet and I've heard both sides. What do you expereinced moms say?

My son's father had a peanut allergy so my doctor told me no peanut butter while I am nursing and then I asked the same doctor at my son's one year check up and he said that the peanut allergy is so rare I shouldn't worry about it.  So I would say if there is a family history I would try and avoid it and try and find a doctor who is a little more consistant than mine and ask them.  My lactation consultants went with the no peanuts rule too so I went that route and it was really hard, but I am a better safe than sorry kind of mom.

Thank you very much all the input!! Makes me feel better :) I don't eat pb everyday and when I do I'll just watch for any adverse reactions. Thanks again!!

Just as anything else you eat, moniter his reactions.  If you notice him being extra gassy, fussy, or has a rash of some sort than steer clear of the food.  If there isn't a peanut allergy in your immediate family, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Each child is different as to how they will react to different things you have eaten... I had to give up my green tea becasue it upset my sons tummy.... and peanut butter, the two times I ate it, he ended up super stuffy the following day. So, I no longer have that either. I would receommend speaking to your sons doctor about it or your local lactation consultant.

Complete myth.  Eat as much PB was you want.

i'm actually encouraged to eat pb for the folic acid in it for brain development, but in moderation. there are other ways too, such as a folic acid supplement.

in a strange cooncidence they talked about this today on "The Doctors", my new favorite show where a couple docs get together and chat about stuff... anyways. They did say that it wasnt a good idea to eat pb while breastfeeding... huh, wouldncha kno...makes me wonder bout my doc.

My pediatritian is a lactation consultant and my sister-in-law's kids  have allergies and both say that the only reason to watch pb intake is if you already have an allergy in the family. Otherwise they are saying it might actually help prenet a future allergy if they can be exposed to little amounts at a time at a young age (as they are in breastfeeding). So unless you have a peanut allergy in the family, I have heard you have nothing to worry about.

My MD told me that if I'd eaten PB when I was pregnant (which I did) then the baby had already been exposed, so to keep eating it if I wanted to. He's 3 months old, I have PB at least a couple of times a week, and so far no problem.
