Pumping and soreness

I started back to work last week and have been pumping 3 - 4 times a day. I am pumping anywhere from 2 - 5 oz at a time for both breasts combined. I have been using the Motherlove Nipple Cream since I am allergic to lanolin.

I have tried 2 different sizes of breast shields, both the 24mm and the 30mm. I have a new Madela Pump in Style.

Finally, my question is, does anyone have any suggestions for nipple soreness? It is getting quite painful.

Thanks

for sure... the manual pump is much much much more less painful... and they don't take much time as u imagine... also try to put some breast over the nipple when u r done and leave it air dry...

Thanks Alecia. I did try turning down the pump and it does help some but it takes a lot longer to pump. I am hanging in here. Some days seem better that others. I keep telling myself that it is worth it.

Like you, I tried everything recommended to me to help nipple soreness. I used a pump for a year with my son when I went back to work and I found that if I turned the knob on my Madela pump to decrease the suction, it helped some. I often had bruised nipples with the pump once I started pumping regularly, but this was fixed with the correct size nipple shield. It seemed as if to get plenty of milk, I had to sacrifice my nipples. I tried creams with no success and I also bought the Gerber ice packs to put on at the end of the day. Honestly, the pain subsided and got better after some time. I found that if the pain was too much when I fed my son at the end of the day that a silicone breast shield helped a lot. It was flexible and provided support and a covering for the cracks while they healed. You have to make sure not to use them too often, however, because it can cause latch trouble down the road, although I never had this problem. Hang in there!!!
