Hey Everyone,

About two days ago, my right breast suddently began to feel so sore/painful that I can't imagine nursing. Its not just the nipple, but the entire breast, 360 degrees around! I wake up in the middle of the night because it hurts when my shirt rubs against it. Any ideas of what this could be? What can i do to soothe the pain? I don't want to stop nursing, but I need this pain to go away!

Thanks!

i remember my mom having mastitis several times and she always had to empty the breast frequently. she is allergic to antibiotics and took homeopathic treatments. she took arnica for the pain and then took lots of black walnut hull, olive leaf, vitamin c and garlic cloves. to each their own but she breastfed 10 kids so i figure she knows what to do.

It almost sounds like plugged ducts. If it is actually the breast itself (nipple not included) and it feels harder than the other in areas, like lumpy, I'd go with plugged ducts. Which can be treated with heat as well as massage for about 10 min. prior to nursing (a baby can remove milk much better than a pump and help with the plugs more effeciently) or pumping if you really think you can't handle it - heat helps to expand the ducts a bit to help things start flowing. When nursing if the plugged ducts are in one area more than others, you can point baby's nose towards that area and that will help. After nursing or pumping apply some cold for a few minutes, this will help decrease the blood flow to the area and the milk accumulation. If you're not noticing any redness or wedge shaped area that's particularly red and swollen then chances are it's not mastitis, you would also feel unwell and may have a fever - if that's the case get to a doc ASAP for antibiotics. In either case of plugged ducts or antibiotics - REST is important, you'll find both things will clear up faster if you do. If your nipple is quite sore along with the rest of the breast tissue then it could possibly be yeast or a bacterial infection. Your nipple may be reddened or cracked looking along with super sore. Usually with a yeast infection baby has white lumpy looking areas in his/her mouth as well (thrush). In either case wheather it is a staph infection or yeast you'll need either antibiotics or to start using an antifungal cream/nystatin for baby which you'd have to get from a doc. Below is a link that might have some more helpful tips, just scroll through the list and you'll see stuff on plugged ducts, yeast, sore nipples, etc. Bottom line though, if it doesn't clear up in a couple days once you narrow the problem down a bit and start treating it you should probably head to the doc. So hope all that helps, check out the link when you can and good luck! :)

This sounds like a plugged duct or mastitis. Treat with hot compresses (I used diapers since they trap the heat for a while). The key is to nurse through the pain if it is a plugged duct the compress and nursing should clear it...same thing with mastitis but you will also need an antiobitic for that to go away. If mastitis goes untreated it can become an absess (YOU DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN trust me I had two - one I needed to have lanced in the ER). If you stop nursing on that side the chances are high that you will end up with an absess as well.

Hot compress, nurse, nurse, nurse, rest, lots of fluids, call you OB...don't wait for them to be in on Monday CALL NOW...seriously delayed treatment of mastitis is not a pretty situation. Feel better.

I have never had this experience before, but i would imagine it MAY be mastitis, get it checked out by a doctor, i know if there is any redness and/or lumps that is another sign. But def get it checked incase it gets worse.
