I'm breastfeeding my son but im going to have surgery this friday.. Due to the medicine I wont be able to use the milk the first 24 hrs after my surgery (according to the dr.) But then I have to go on a liquid diet for a week.. with soft foods like mashed potatoes and yogarts, etc. (I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled..OUCH! ) I'm scared that not being able to have a healthy diet my body will slowly produce less and less milk.. I know a week isnt a long time but I dont want to sacrifice breastfeeding!!

**NOTE: I will be pumping when I can**

Also my son today kept refusing my breast no matter how hungry he got. He IS teething so maybe that had something to do with it but I dont want him getting used to the bottle while im unable to breastfeed him since i'll be doped up the first 48 hours.

My husband and I had a very bad stomach flu in December. We had to have a liquid diet for a few days once the nausea subsided - all in all, I was a day without food, and then about 2 more days with only liquids. I did not notice any change in my supply, or in my baby's behavior. Like the other ladies said, you will be fine!

Good luck with your surgery!

Is it because of the anesthesia that he says you can't nurse? Because you are ok to nurse once you are awake and able to hold the baby. I would double check about the meds again. You can call the InfantRISK center. They are trained to help you figure out if a medicine is compatible with breastfeeding or not. http://www.infantrisk.org/

I'm with Kathy on the diet. I think you'll be fine. If you do find out you can't nurse for 24 hours then pump. When you're able to nurse then just nurse when he wants (even during the liquid diet) and your supply will be fine. More info on meds and surgery:

Good luck!!

Firstly, you do NOT have to wait 24 hours to nurse your baby.

Most doctors simply don't know anything about breastfeeding, so they just take the conservative route and tell you not to nurse for 24 hours.

I agree with Kathy. I doubt your diet will affect your supply much. Just keep nursing on demand. Your body will use its own resources to make milk.. if it doesn't get it from diet, it will use your stored fats and such.

Hi Darian,
Your breasts will continue to produce milk whatever your diet. Women have been breastfeeding their babies throughout history and prehistory through droughts, wars, famine and all the rest.
According to kellymom:
"you do not need to maintain a perfect diet in order to provide quality milk for your baby. In fact, research tells us that the quality of a mother’s diet has little influence on her milk. Nature is very forgiving – mother’s milk is designed to provide for and protect baby even in times of hardship and famine. A poor diet is more likely to affect the mother than her breastfed baby."

The best way to maintain your supply is to feed your baby and/or pump as often as you can.
How old is your little boy? If he's teething that would probably explain why he's being fussy. Or perhaps he's sensing your tension - worrying about the surgery, worrying about your milk supply. So just try and relax and offer the breast as often as you can.
Hope the wisdom teeth removal goes well. You'll be better off without them.
