my 2 week old sleeps in the bed with me and i really want to feed him in the night without getting up by the side lying position. i am concerned though that if i don't burp him he will either spit up or get really gassy. i have tried it a few times and it has worked, but that was before he started having gas problems and before i had a ton of milk. i am just really tired some night having to pick him up and feed him and them rock him back to sleep. any suggestions?

I would just keep trying.  My son wouldn't nurse side laying until he was at least a month old because he seemed to need a lot of help getting latched on.  I never really burped him, so I don't have any advice for that, but do remember that usually BF babies don't take in much air when they nurse from the breast.

Each baby is different. Experts say burping at night isn't always necessary because baby is relaxed and doesn't usually take in much air (they're not guzzling their food). But, my little one needed burping for the first six weeks before she could sleep through. If I didn't burp, she'd wake up a hour later screaming in pain. So, try it out and see how it goes. Sounds like for now you'll need to burp but soon enough it will get easier. Your milk will also level out and won't come out so fast. It takes a good six weeks for you and baby to get into a breastfeeding groove. It feels like forever but just stick with it and you'll soon find you both have a routine down for making it through the nights!

my 5 week old sleeps with me, and we just starting doing exactly that. i'll keep him in the middle of the bed, then whenever he wakes me up, i get on the other side of the bed and feed him from that breast, and we fall asleep this way. its been working very well, he hasnt had any problems with gas from that specifically. he also has colic, but it peeks in the early evening so i know it isnt tied to his our nursing/ eating habits at night. it is soooo much easier and we both get so much more sleep. i say keep trying it, and if it seems his gas is directly related to not being burped, then try to break it. but i think its well worth another try. good luck!

You can still stay laying down to burp baby - I would sit baby on my chest supporting him with my hand leading him forward a bit and tap him with the other hand. It worked ok. It certainly was nice when he got old enough to not need burping :-)

I did not start the sidelying until maybe my son was 4 months, but he is also 3 months premature. He would fall right back to sleep. so I didn't want to wake him to burp him. Like the previous poster said, try it and see, since all babies are different.

i think that is why he is getting gas! i am trying to hand express as much as i can before he nurses so he doesn't  get gas. i have been trying it for a day and he is already less fussy. but, i will give it a try and see if it works. or i will just wait until my milk calms down a liittle bit. thanks!

I couldn't do sidelying with my first child at all, I don't know why. It's pretty much the only way I nursed at night with my 2nd though. I don't think it began to work out until she was a month old though. Neither of my girls ever needed burped. It just was something I stopped (or forgot to do!) after the first week or so. You might just want to try and see what happens. I would bet some of the gas problems might have been a result of how fast milk flows while you are building your supply. Now that you have evened out he might not get the gas.
