So I striktly brestfeed my daughter, she is 5 months and 3 weeks. I was wondering when would be a good time try her with a sippy cup. I don't plan to stop brestfeeding yet, but I'm thinking about when she gets teeth. It's a kinda scary thought. I was thining that the flow of a sippy cup would be too fast for her. Any thoughts?

My little guy is just over a year and I still nurse him for naps and bedtime and comfort when he needs it. Don't be afraid of the teeth, you can keep BFing after they arrive no problem. You might get nipped a couple times but if you take her off the breast and sternly tell her no she will quickly learn that if she wants to eat she can't bite. My rule was twice in a row and that feeding is over. It didn't take long for my guy to catch on. Keep in mind that they aren't trying to be mean, they are just curious about these weird new things in their mouth and want to try them out. Try not to react by jumping or screaming, she might think you're trying to be funny so she'll keep doing it. Just calmly say no.

I introduced tupperwear sippy cups when I introduced solids at 6 months. Just a little water so my son could get useed to the idea at meal times. If he was thirsty during the meal I'd help him take a sip or two and after the meal I let him play with it and figure it out. At about the same time my son learned to drink from a straw so I got some flip straw cups by Nuby which are really great. They have a sort of valve so the baby controls how fast the flow is and they don't leak. I keep one full of water on the floor at all times so if my son gets thirsty while he's playing he can help himself. These are also great for car rides and trips to the mall.

Quoting Krystal:

And there would be no chance of her geting too much at one time and chokeing? Does the cup come with the different spouts or do you have to buy them separately? Where would I be able to find one?

I got mine from the local pharmacy, but I live in Australia. I just did a Google search and it turns out that it's actually a Singaporean product that's also sold in Australia. I'm not sure where you live but you might not be able to get it unless you're prepared to order it online. You might be better off just experimenting with different cups that are more readily available.

I'm very sorry, I didn't mean to mislead you, I didn't realise it's not available worldwide.

I just gave my daughter a sippy cup of breastmilk this week. She took it wonderfully. She is 5 months. She will not take a bottle and the few hours of work is a trying for my husband and her. This last time was pretty decent. She did well, The cup was narrow with three little holes at the top.It was actually a free Juicy Juice one. If you are scared of the teeth(and with my daughter I am because she has been teething and already yaks and pulls) Try that, but try to have someone else start her on it if you put your milk in it. Also, on teeth. I know each infant is different, but my son only bite me once and when I took him away from the breast at that moment he seemed to understand and never did it again. I breastfed him for 9 months. He also did great with a sippy cup, but I only tried juice with him because I didn't work at that time.

My daugher was only breastfed then straight to a sippy cup. I started giving her sippy cups around 5 or 6 months. She would play with it and really didn't know what to do with it at first. So I would only put a little bit of water in it and let he play around with it until she figured it out. I wouldn't suggest to put anything else in it until she knows how to get the water out. She will spit it out at first...and you don't want milk, juice, etc. all over the place. No the flow will not be too fast. Buy the ones for beginners (with two handles to hold the cup). I bought one that had a part inside that you could reverse from fast to slow flow I think it was a Nuby. Good luck.

I am also skipping the bottle stage and went straight to sippy cup. I introduced it to my son about 5 1/2 months. I use a cup where the spout needs to be compressed by baby's mouth in order to get flow. He took to it straight away, I think it's because he can control the flow by chewing on the spout. It's called MagMag, it's a yellow BPA free cup. It has different spouts for different ages, the current one we use is from 5 months. At 8 months he will go on to a straw type spout.

It can't hurt to try, if she doesn't like it, wait a few days and try again, just keep giving her small amounts and she will get used to it. The worst that can happen is a bit of mess on her clothes, but we're all used to that by now anyway :-)
