sling recommendation

I hope I will find some help here on that. I'm planning on finding and using almost constantly a baby sling for a newborn until 6 months old, later I will use ergo baby. For that first period I need something that is going to be comfortable for baby to sleep and nurse constantly and will give me free hands to take care of a two year old.

I'm a 5'3'' and 110 lbs petit person, my first baby was 8 lbs and obviously they grow really fast in those first weeks, so I need a sling that would fit my frame and was also big enough for a baby. Recommendations from experienced breastfeeders :)

There are SO many options out there for baby wearing. Ring slings and mobys are just the tip of the ice burg. I personally prefer woven wraps to the stretchy ones like a moby. They offer a lot more support and are super versatile. You can use them from newborn up to toddler hood. I can even still wrap my 5 year old on my back in a wrap. They can be used in a front, hip or back carry (back carrier should NEVER be attempted with a stretchy wrap like a Moby). They come in many different lengths and fabric blends.

That being said there is still so many other options out there and it's just a matter of finding out what works best for you and your baby. I highly suggest checking out www.thebabywearer.com. It's a community of baby wearing mamas and there is a huge amount of information there about every single carrier on the market and how to use it. I bet there are even some mama's there that could give you advice on nursing in the ergo.

Good luck and have fun!!

A ring sling is prob easiest to nurse in, but you won't be doing that all the time ;) I loved my Je Porte Mon Babe, it's a cross between a woven & stretchy wrap. The prob with it is that all the web video instructions are in French! It's great for keeping them warm in the winter & also pretty easy to adjust position for feeding.

Hope that helps

Thank you so much! everyone! I have moby for now, but if it won't work I will try your other suggestions.

I 2nd the Baby K'tan. It's very similar to a wrap, but without any wrapping! Love, love, love it!! Check it out at Babyktan.com or search on YouTube for reviews and videos. I am 5'3' 115lbs pre-baby, but after baby I'm still 130lbs and the small size fits me just fine. When I started getting smaller after my daughter was born, and she started getting larger I would occasionally need to wash it to shrink it up again, but I still think the small was the best size for me (so the xsmall would probably be perfect for you).

I have a Ktan and I love it! My son loves it too. It was easy to breastfeed in for the first few months but now it is more difficult. I must say I have always found nursing (I have a 2 year old daughter too) in any carrier extremely hard, So it just may be me. Otherwise it is super easy to use. I am 5'2" and around 100lbs and the extra-small fits me great. I personally never wanted to have to deal with learning how to wrap a long piece of fabric and so the Ktan was my top choice and I'm overall very happy with it.

i bought a moby wrap. I could nurse in it. Have baby there and do anything hands free knowing she was VERY secure in there. I'm 5 ft and a hundred pounds. Loved it. My husband even used the wrap because it fits any body type and is SO easy to clean up. let's face it, they will spit up on it, spill milk out mouths when nursing and poop out their pants in the sling. i needed it washable. mine has lasted 5 years through three kids!! and i even used it in the "backpack" mode when kids got bigger.

But, some of the wraps down there, i've never heard of. I just know what worked for me.

i have a boba sleepy wrap..and i love it !!!! i had horrible problems finding a carrier that fit my small frame and would allow me to carry my big boy around longer than 15 minutes. it takes a bit to get the wrapping down but once you do, it is awesome !! the wrap distributes the weight of the baby evenly and allows you to carry them longer...plus you can nurse them if you wanted too :) good luck with your search :)

I found my padded ring sling easiest to nurse in (We have an Over the Shoulder Baby Holder), but for hands-free newborn care a Moby wrap was the greatest thing ever. While they're still squishy, they can get mushed up in the sling and you have to keep checking to make sure that they can breathe. The wrap keeps them upright and tight against you, but also holds their head so you don't have to. Most people nurse comfortably in the Moby too. My baby just didn't like being held that tightly while she ate.

Most babywearers I know have several carriers because every kind is best for some babies and some positions, but not so good for others. We have the sling , the Moby, and a Toddler Patapum. If I have another baby, I'd like a baby sized soft carrier also.

You can use an Ergo for a newborn. You just need the insert is all. However, that being said, a ring sling is really nice to have around sometimes, and I absolutely adore my Moby wrap too. Between the sling and Moby, the Moby gave me the most freedom of movement with my hands because the baby is held so snugly against your body. I don't have an ergo, but I'm hoping to get one this time around.

I had a Maya wrap, which worked, but attracted lint like you wouldn't BELIEVE so aesthetically i found it frustrating. Later on I got a Sakura Bloom reversible silk sling, which was pricey but i LOVED it. I also found it a little easier to adjust--perhaps because it was heavier fabric than the Maya.

First I can't nurse using a sling so my suggestions only go for ease/comfort for mom. I used to love a ring sling (like the Maya) but after my third, I hurt my shoulder carrying my 2 month old and bought a Moby. I really like the Moby. It's comfortable, easy to assemble (though a ring sling is super simple in comparison), and places baby's weight all around, not just at the shoulder. To help with using it in public, I put it on at home. Then, to nurse I slip it off my shoulder(s). It would be easiest to have a nursing shirt or a button shirt with this wrap but I just tuck my shirt back in under the wrap when done.

Good luck!

I love my Maya Wrap. It's a ring sling. The Maya Wrap has a padded shoulder for additional comfort. It comes in several sizes. I used my constantly when my 2nd baby was born as I had a 2 1/2 year ld to chase after. She nursed in it many times, and I still use it with her now (she's 16 months).

I had a different type of sling with my older daughter when she was born, and I hated it. I can't speak highly enough of the Maya Wrap. I also tried the Moby Wrap. I know lots of women love it - but I hated it. It was fine if I'd spend the time wrapping it on right at home and just put the baby in and left her in. But if I had to take her out or do any adjustment to it I'd end up having to take the whole thing off and re-wrap it. Much much more complicated and time consuming than a good ring sling which adjusts quickly and easily.
