So Frustrated! Need to vent!

So this morning I went to the hospital to have a CT scan done as ordered by my doctor. They went through the routine questions with me and asked when my last menstraul cycle was. I said 01/28/08 and explained that I am still nursing my 9 month old which would explain the lack of periods. They said ok and gave me an IV with contrast for the CT scan. After it was complete, they told me that I CAN'T BREASTFEED MY DAUGHTER for at least 12 hours!!!!! The woman looked at me and said, well you have milk stored don't you??? NO!! My daughter has never had to take a bottle in her life. We soley breastfeed. Now for the next twelve hours, they say I have to pump and dump and give her formula! I am so frustrated and my husband is furious!!! I specifically told my doctor that I wanted no tests done that would interfere with breastfeeding!! Now I'm stuck for the day because no one told me I couldn't breastfeed until the test was over!

I dont think its the fact that baby had to go without breast milk for 12 hrs it is the fact that her dr after being specific still went ahead and did a prosedure that she asked not to be done. If they had warned her ahead of time she could have responded. But they didnt and they gave her info that was vital to her and the care of ther daughter without warning her. I know I would be vurious if my dr went ahead and did something after I specifically told him my request.

In case anyone affected by a similar situation reads this... at that age there's no reason the baby can't go for 12 hours without breastmilk. They can have solids, and cooled boiled water if you don't want to use formula (I know I don't want my baby having it), and if they won't drink from a bottle, by this age they're often willing to experiment with sippy cups or real cups, or worst comes to worst you can spoon feed them water. The baby won't suffer in the long run from a few hours without breastmilk.

I would register an official complaint though if I were you, if only to hopefully prevent any other mums going through the stress you went though.

WOW, that really sucks! I guess from now on we all know to ask beforehand, "Now I can still nurse right?" Because chances are the "pros" won't tell you first. LAME!

What a bunch of BS. I am glad that you are still able to BF. But seriously they should have told you the risk before hand. Thats like telling someone you need surgery and after you consent they say and by the way you could die too. Come on poeple you are suppose to warn poeple and give them all the facts before hand. I'd be looking for another Dr real quick. One who respects the fact that I am a BFing mom. Again glad things worked out for you in the long run.

Wow, thankfully they were wrong then. That would have sucked. My son won't take a bottle of anything so I would have been up a creek with no paddle on that one.

After doing my own research and speaking with a lactation consultant, I have found that it is perfectly safe to breastfeed after a CT scan. No more worries.
