I am not sure what to be giving my 13 month old in a bottle/cup. She has been bottle fed breast milk. I have given her 1 oz soy milk with breast milk in her bottle. My milk supply is diminishing and my stash of frozen milk is down to 14 bags. Should I be introducing Cows milk? Whats the difference? Can I just give her soy milk? I am at a crossroad and dont know what direction to go. I am supposed to be weaning her from 3 bottles to 2 also.

I did some research online after this post. The issue with soy is that there is less fat then cows milk and babies need fat also less calcium is absorbed when drinking soy but if she eats yogurt, cheese and other foods that contain fats, proteins and calcium she will get enough. If you are mixing it with breastmilk then she is definitely getting what she needs. As for the phytoestrogens, it occurs naturally in soy milk as well as apples, dry beans, and potatoes. All the articles I read said in small amounts it is fine. Hope this helps.

I buy organic soy milk and give it to my 20 month old while still nursing her at night. There are so many more nutrients in soy milk then cows milk. If she likes the soy milk I would stick with it, cows milk doesn't have anything nutritionally in it. If you continue to nurse her at night you should have enough milk even if it doesn't seem like it, your body adjusts to it. Babies are suppossed to eat more food then drink milk after 1 year. If she has milk in the morning and at night give her water or diluted juice during the day to keep her hydrated.

I agree w/ Lisa.

We do consume some soy products, but w/ as much milk as my family consumes I stay away from soy milk (even if I DID like it).

I would stick with cow's milk. There are some issues with the phytoestrogens found in unfermented soy products, and you don't want your daughter to be having too much of that.
