We tried at 6 months with some rice cereal mixed with breast milk. He didn't take to it, so I waited a week and tried again with oat cereal, which he likes, he opens for the spoon, swallows, wants more. I give it to him twice a day now, morning and night, about half an hour to an hour after his regular breastfeeding. at this point it's for practice, not nutrition as they get everything they need from breast milk

I highly recommend the approach known as 'baby led weaning'. In case you've never heard of it, this doesn't refer to extended breastfeeding and allowing your child to self wean. (Although I'm all for that as well haha) BLW is an approach to solids where you skip purees and dive right into fingers foods, all along, allowing your child to self feed. Purees were all fine and dandy back in the day when people were starting their babies on solids at 2 and 3 months of age. But now that they recommend you wait till 6 months...well, by that time your child is completely capable of feeding him/herself.

We started with purees at 6 months and my son took really well to them. Kind of too well! He never really gave me any signs that he was full and so he let me just keep shoveling the food into his mouth. Obviously I would stop after the max serving suggestion. But even though I would nurse my son before solids, I found that very quickly, he was taking less and less time at the breast and filling up on solids. I think a lot of moms would take this as a sign that their child was weaning themself from the breast. But it's very rare for a child to self-wean before a year and I was not at all wanting to do formula. I ended up speaking to a lactation consultant and she suggested BLW.

Right away, when we started BLW we noticed that he would stop eating when he was ready and breastfeeding went back to normal.

This approach has just felt a lot more natural and it's more fun too. If I were to have another child, I would most definitely skip the purees right from the start.

If you have any questions I would be happy to share and help you out if this is something that interests you. Also, here's a link to the main BLW website and there's a book that you can purchase as well...
