i would really like to stop breastfeeding! my lil one is almost 10mnths old. the plan is to stop just before 1st birthday. i have no clue how to go about this. it seems such a daunting task. it seems harder than getting started with breastfeeding. would really appreciate any help and advice ppl can offer. ive read other threads but it isnt making me feel any better about the task in hand.

I'm a little late in responding. My little guy hated formula, too. I waited and used cow's milk. However, he didn't like that either, and what we did was mix a little cow's milk in with breastmilk, and then slowly over time increased the cowsmilk until we eventually got to straight-up cowsmilk. I think doing the same with formula would work. Good luck!

its not that he doesnt like it, he will drink it but not if he decides its time for mommy milk instead.its time to stop for me, has been for a long time but wanted to wait till he was 12mnths, i know it sounds selfish but, i have given him the good start and now i need to stop. xx

Have you thought about continuing to breastfeed since he doesn't like the formula? Here's some info on dairy sensitivities

thank you for all advice given. i was considering going cold turkey as have tried cutting down his feeds n he just refuses the formula and then wakes up more at night to feed! also a friend who has a very similar child to mine had to do it that way. ive got to replace with formula as he has a dairy allergy n will need to go onto soya milk and babies must stay on this till 2yrs old.xx

Yea good luck. just dont do it cold turkey i heard it can cause an infection, not to mention how uncomfortable engorged breasts become.

HI- I stopped nursing about a week before my daughters first birthday. I was scared to stop also and felt the same way you did. So when I read your post, I knew that I had to respond. I was starting to dry up anyway because she was a big food eater. I took out 1 feeding every other day to let my body adjust slowly. ( I still had that full feeling for the first day or two), to get rid of that full feeling I would put cold cabbage leaves into my bra every few hours. This would help with the pain, but by day 3 I was much more comfortable. Everyone kept telling me to pump to take the edge off, but I did not want to increase my supply at all - so this was not an option for me. I put my daughter right onto organic whole milk and had no trouble at all. She was ready to take a bottle, and I was more than ready to have my body back to myself. I would not go cold turkey- It will be painful. Let your body adjust slowly and good luck!

Are you wanting to avoid formula? If you're wanting to avoid formula, I'd wean *AFTER* they turn one.
If not, you'll need to replace breastfeedings with formula.
You'll need to take it slowly and drop one feeding per week. You don't want to risk mastitis..
