My baby is 5weeks old & does the same. Sometimes i let her suck my finger & she'l fall asleep but if shes still fussing or crying i just feed her again. At this stage its constant nursing!

my daughter is 9weeks old and she sucks her fist as a soothing thing, even after a feed she will do it to comfort herself, if I have to leave her to cry for a bit (like if I'm in the bathroom or cooking) I will find her sucking her fist to keep herself chilled, it's good news that they're self soothing already in my opinion.

My boy has a strong sucking need, too. When he was first born, he was nursing ALL the time, and my lactation consultant suggested that because he was latching well and gaining weight at a great pace, we give him pacifiers after meals. Well, a latex nipple just isn't comparable to human skin, and he wouldn't take it.

Finally, when he reached about 6-7 weeks old, he "found" his hands/wrists and now he sucks on those all the time. He's still gains weight like crazy, and has good, solid feedings, but the baby just needs to suck and a hand is always just an arms length away! As long as your son is eating well, pooping well, and gaining weight, count yourself lucky that he has found his hand to suck on and doesnt need pacifiers or his human pacifier (aka you!!).

My son had a huge sucking reflex! He began to nurse for 50 minutes on each side and my pediatrician helped me realize he just had an insatiable sucking reflex. We used pacis and bottles of water to help him get it out of his system. Most the moms around me didn't use pacis or their children wouldn't take them, but mine loved sucking on them. We were able to wean him from the paci really well, but as an infant nothing else would work and his doctor actually pushed for it. I was finally able to nurse at normal times and I was able to realize that he wasn't just starving like I thought. Your little one might have a similar sucking obesession!

it can mean he's still hungry, but it could mean he's just self soothing. If he's crying or fussing and sucking on his fist, he may need to eat more.
