my baby is almost 9 months old and i haven't had sore nipples while bf since just after he was born, maybe up to 2-3months. suddenly they are getting sore again. he isn't nursing any more often than normal, actually a little less bc he really enjoys his solids. also i've been feeling like i'm going to start my period for a few days, maybe a week but i haven't yet. i don't bother keeping track of my periods bc they've always been irregular but esp since childbirth. i've had 4 or 5 periods since corbin was born and i haven't experienced sore nipples with any of them. should i take a home pregnancy test, or are there other reasons my nipples would hurt again?

I had sore nipples before each period. I remember not having them with one and thought they were gone, but they came back with the next one. My cycles were also pretty irregular. Pretty much anything goes with breastfeeding when it comes to your period. If you think you'd be far enough along to test now then give it a try, if not then wait a week or so. I just bought the big packs of tests because while breastfeeding it was so hard to tell what was going on. Then we started trying to get pregnant so I was testing a lot lol.

Your hormones alone can be throwing your entire body off. You can also be pregnant. I say take a test and see what happens. Since you guys want another baby, I hope you are pregnant. If your not just keep on trying. Good luck :)

I all of a sudden got sore nipples while nuring and I was pregnant. However, one of the first things my midwive asked me (i hadn't taken a pregnancy test yet) was if I was having yeast issues as that could make my nipples hurt during nursing (my boy was almost 2, so there wasn't much of anything else it could have been). I'd say test.

It can't hurt to take a HPT. If you aren't pregnant, it's probably tenderness with your period. Any chance you or Corbin has been on antibiotics for anything lately? Could be thrush.

I experienced extremely sore nipples when my daughter was about 5 months old. They hurt so bad they even started to crack and bleed and I would cry every time I pumped or fed her. It turned out that she had thrush and a yeast infection and that I had a yeast infection on my nipples. Even if you don't think your baby has thrush, you could have excess yeast on your nipples that is causing them to be sore. It is worth talking to your doctor or lactation consultant about. Also, I would take an at home test just to put yourself at ease.

Just wanted to add that breast feeding is not birth control. Even if you didn't have your period, you could still get pregnant.
I say take a test. Good luck!

you should take a test and see sometimes women have sore nipples for no reason

I charted my basal body temperature and tracked other signs of ovulation. I actually used http://www.fetilityfriend.com to help interpret and record my info. It's a free site that has lots of good info. When I saw signs of ovulation we didn't have sex. We did the opposite when we started trying so I used the charting for both preventing and then TTC. Charting while breastfeeding is a little more difficult. You need at least 3 consecutive hours of sleep and you want to try to take your temp at the same time every morning. That was hard when my baby was still waking in the night. If your period is back then you should consider it likely that you can get pregnant. I only had 6 cycles before getting pregnant (my period didn't return until my daughter was 11 months). If i were you I would just take a test. It always put my mind at ease when we weren't trying.

sara- i know every woman is different, but when you weren't trying where you doing anything to prevent or just kind of wingin it? i'm just trying to get an idea of how likely it is that i may actually be pregnant. we don't really do anything to prevent (just pull out but that doesn't really count.)

no he doesn't have any teeth or thrush. how would him feeding less make them sore? i kinda hate taking home tests though bc we do want another in a few months and if its negative, it always brakes my heart...even though we aren't actively trying. thanks for the information! :)

There could be other reasons to have sore nipples. Does your son have teeth or just cut some? I know I got sore when my daughter got her first ones because they were so sharp. Also thrush can cause sore nipples or the fact that he'sfeed ing a little less but there is no harm in doing a test anyway just to put your mind at rest. I do them just randomly sometimes to make sure that i'm not cause periods can be so weird while feeding.
