What is YOUR sweetest breastfeeding moment?

I remember it had been a hard day for my daughter and I. She had finally stopped squirming and fussing enough to settle at my breast. She was looking at me, and she smiled and made this noise like she was trying to talk while eating, 'laulaulau.' It was the first time she had made that noise - and in that moment it felt like the most encouraging thing anyone had ever done for me. It was like she was trying to say, 'I know it's been a hard day for us but I love you and I love nursing with you.'

I remember when my son was wriggling around and kept coming off my breast, he'd been doing it for about 5 minutes when he looked up at me, smiled, then passed wind! It was so cute because it was like he knew he was going to do it so he smiled up at me... Almost as if he was saying 'look mum here's something funny'

oh I just love those moments too! When they stop to give you a big smile and then return to nursing or stroke your hand while nursing. It's so reassuring you're doing the right thing for your baby and rewarding!

I'm all teary reading these responses...great conversation!!!

One night Josephine had a really stuffy nose so I brought her into the bathroom with the shower running hot so the steam could loosen her sinuses. It was about 4:30 am and I was super sleepy but I settled down on the floor anyway. I started to unhook my nursing tank and Josephine looked up at me smiled her first real smile. It was like she was thanking me for doing everything I could to make her feel better.

I've had a similar experience with my 2 month old. She will pause briefly while nursing just to stare into my eyes, smile, make a cute gargle noise and continue breastfeeding. It warms my heart. It makes it worth all that I sacrifice during the day and the time it takes.

When my first born was about four months old, we visited the Washington Zoo in November. It wasn't crowded at all- so when he wanted to nurse I sat on the ledge right in front of the gorilla exhibit. On the other side was a mother gorilla nursing her baby while I nursed mine. I can't quite convey the feeling of the whole thing. It's stuck with me for nine years.

With each of the three kids, I've always enjoyed the milk drunk look, the exploring paw and the shark look... when their eyes sort of roll back up into their head while nursing. So many good memories, it's hard to select just one...

These stories are just great! Thank you for starting this conversation, what a great way to start my day! I agree with the milky smiles -those are the best!
When I'm switching Cloé from one breast to the other I think that the anticipation is just too much for her! She opens her mouth before she's even lying down again and I mean wide! She is just so cute shaking her head with her eyes tightly shut but her mouth wide open.
Another fave is when she's feeding and my husband sits down next to us she'll look at him and smile without letting go, then she keeps eating and flirting with him with her big blue eyes! She melts our hearts and is sure to break some in the future!!

Quoting Katrice:

When my daughter was much smaller she use to always put her spare hand up to my mouth to have it kissed by me during the whole feed.

Aaron does this too, its so sweet! Sometimes he sticks his thumb in my mouth too, hes a thumb sucker so maybe he thinks hes being nice to me, giving me a thumb to suck on, lol.

Most of my moments when breastfeeding are sweet. But I think they only get sweeter! Like now - my daughter will be 1 on Oct. 14th and she still snuggles in and waits for our eyes to meet while she is nursing. Those are moments I will always remember when I look into her eyes 10, 20 even 30 years from now!! xox

Mine isn't so much sweet as funny. My son and I were practicing laying down and nursing when he was new born because we co-slept. I had friends over and her husband didn't even notice I was nursing while he sat there talking to me. Well my son pulled himself off the breast very abrupt and i squirted milk across the room like a cartoon. My gf and I were dying laughing as we watched this milk make this lovely arch up into the air and drop off some where close to the tv!!! She was like "hey man nice shot!!" We were both in tears laughing as her husband left the room and I yelled after him.. "if you can't laugh at that what can you laugh at?!?!". To this day my friend and I still get a good laugh about it!

My six week old daughter kicks her leg and pumps her fist when she's hungry and settling in to nurse. Before she latches on, she opens her eyes really wide and shakes her head a few times, trying to capture the nipple. She has done this from the first, and I love to see it!

2 moments stick out...

1..my son trying to blow rasberries and nurse at the same time..he was only a few months old at the time and it was the first time he laughed hysterically (I was in stiches!) ..He'd laughed many times before but he had the giggles for about 10 minutes with this :-)

2. (he's 11 months now) he now lifts up my shirt and will try to nurse through my bra if i don't get my breast out fast enough..usually when this happens, he says "hey" (his new fave word) and hits my boob..it HILARIOUS

I love how excited my little girl Sapphire gets right before she latches on. Her eyes get all big, she makes these "oh, oh, oh, oh" noises, has her mouth wide open and sometimes even shakes her head back and forth! It always makes me giggle. And of course, I love those cute noises she makes when she eats =] Nursing is the best.

The milky smiles are great. For me the sweetest was her very first meal- Phoebe latched on before her umbilical cord was cut (I found that super cool that while she was not even a minute old she knew what to do) and she looked right at me. I was astounded by her alertness.

My sweetest moment is when he smiles and makes sweet little whimpering noises.

The funniest moments are when all three of us (including husband) are settling down in bed. My son crawls over to me and dive bombs straight for the breast because he knows it's bed time and that is how he is soothed. We just crack up laughing.

Great Conversation!

I love it when my son stops nursing to smile up at me and talk to me! But my absolute favorite moment was when he was two or three months old, while he was nursing he looked up at me, put his hand on my cheek and smiled at me until he was done nursing and fell asleep! He makes my heart melt.

I love the little smiles... I also love it when his free hand goes up to my face and gently explores my face, touching my cheek, sometimes tweaking my nose--so cute, melts my heart!

My daughter also tried to feed her brand new baby brother recently, but my favorite has to be when her older brother, my firstborn decided he was going to try to pump for his brand new baby sister! Kayleen did her first smile that day as i was laughing!

I'm still breastfeeding my 2 year old boy and now we have a 3 month old - I love it when my older son puts his hand over his little brother's hand and they both fall asleep while breastfeeding together...

Sara, I love that story made me think of my niece, she's 2 and she used to pass me her dolls and expect me to feed them! I think my sister is still rolling about on the floor laughing.

My little one used to snort loudly when she was a few weeks old and hungry - so cute and odd.

I really love the smiles she gives me when she's just pretending to feed (milk-drunk and mostly asleep, and just enjoying hanging out). I stroke her cheek and she gives me this "you caught me!" smile, with her eyes closed.

I love it when my daughter stops eating to look up at me and smile or start talking to me (she is 4 months). also she makes the cutest sounds too when she is real hungry almost a excited whiney noise...it is so cute. and my husband just chuckles everytime he hears her. he also says that she acts like she just got done eating a thanksgiving feast everytime she eats with the way she goes to sleep after every meal....lol

I love the smiles and laughter, too, during BFing. But the greatest thing is being able to nurse the tears away. My 17 mo old son's latest thing is lying on top of me to breastfeed; he'll bear hug me and I can put my arms around him. So cute... Thank you for such uplifting posts. I love breastfeeding!

The milk drunk face is one of my favs! I nurse my ds, but dd (3yrs) wants to help. I always crack up when I walk in on her nursing her dolls. Especially in public, we have to stop her, she'll lift her dress all the way up. But my funniest memory will be her trying to nurse her baby brother. He was about 6 weeks old and woke up hungry. I let him cry for a sec to run to the potty. Came back and she was lying next to him talking real softly, "here buddy, it's right here". She looked up at me and said, "I'm trying to help you Mama, but he won't eat"! We had a looong talk after that. LOL!

Up until a few days ago we have been co-sleeping with our 5 month old son, so whenever he got hungry in the middle of the night he didn't have to wait to get fed. He would just wake up and nuzzle me until I woke up and started feeding him. He always makes the cutest sounds when he is nursing! I love the drunken milk face and the big milky smiles and sounds too. It is so rewarding!

I saw this post and immediately thought about the first time my son stopped nursing to smile at me then return to nursing...I also love what I call the milk drunk face...when they are so content and full after a feeding.

it so refreshing to hear a positive thought when it comes to breast feeding. When breastfeeding is encouraged and excepted, it is the most cherished and wonderful experience one can ever have.

I love it when my son nurses for a bit and then looks up at me and stops just for enough time to flash me a big milky grin... its almost as if he is saying thank you to me!
