Hi, I am planning on getting a tattoo, but don't know if I can (or should) while I am still breastfeeding. I have no problem with waiting until my son is done nursing, but I am just wondering if anyone has done this?

According to La Leche League International,

"There is no evidence suggesting that tattoos affect the breastfeeding relationship or have any effect on breastmilk. If you have chosen to adorn your body with a tattoo and give your baby the best start in life by breastfeeding you can feel comfortable in your decision."

The most prevalent risk of getting a tattoo while breastfeeding is of a systemic infection, but with tattoo parlors being regulated and practicing proper hygiene, this risk is low.

theres NO greater risk. You have the same risk when you are not nursing. the ink goes NO where near the babys milk supply...so if you want it and you know the risks involving any tattoo...the go for it! I did, i got one when my daughter was 5 months old....and i checked w/ my drs and the tattoo artist before hand, they all said the same thing, theres no greater risk while nursing, then while not nursing!

the reason its not recomended is because of the infection risk, just like piercings needle sharing extra there is a risk of an unsanitary needle passing on a disease or infection from another client. if the needle is a new steralised one its fine make sure you see the artist get the needle out of a new sealed packet b4 use.

I got a tattoo while breastfeeding my daughter. From what I can remember... what I read was that the cells from the ink are too big to go through the filter that your body does. Remember that the filter for the milk your body produces is the best filter out there. And what does a tattoo artist know about nursing. Except that they could be liable. My daughter is fine. And trust me I am one of those paranoid moms when it comes to my baby girl.

getting a tattoo whilst still breastfeeding is not advisable, just like its not advisable to get a tattoo whilst pregnant...it is best and safest to wait till ur finished nursing ur child.....

I was also going to get one but was told by the tattoo artist that is not safe. I didnt go ahead with it. I figured I would just wait.
