I had been trying to figure this question out too for the past few months, and after plenty of research i found that the risks are all the same for getting tattoos while breast feeding. The only risk you have is HIV and hep c. Which anyone has the risks of those when getting a tattoo. I called drs, and tattoo artists, they also agreed.

So, I just got my first tattoo on june 6 of this year, and i am breast feeding my daughter who was only 4 months then, and she is fine, and so am I. And I am happy I went thru with it. hope this helps you.

I've gotten 2 large tattoos while breastfeeding, and I was just fine. I also got tattooed while pregnant. I was very confident that it was safe, because my midwife said it was, and my tattoo artist just happens to be my husband! LOL, I get my tattoos in my bedroom with sterile brand new tools. =] Discretion is the most important thing, making a good choice of shop and artist!

also the tattoo is on the skin, it doesnt get into your blood stream, so no matter where you get it, even on the breast, it will not effect the mile supply....but it may hurt when they are pushing on you....lol

I am planning on getting tattooed on my daughter's first birthday. I will of course still be breast feeding when I get my tattoo. I have three tattoos and have never had an infection- generally infections occur with poor aftercare rather than from the tattoo shop. Since tattoo parlors are under a lot of scrutiny from the state and local health department, they tend to be extremely clean. As long as you are going to a reputable place, I'd say go for it.

I looked that up tattoos and breast feeding some time ago and I did find (tho I don't have the links anymore) that some colors have metals in them you would probably want to avoid. Since there haven't been any studies done on the subject its hard to find any real info, but there are precautions/just in case/to be on the safe side articles online about getting tattoos while breast feeding.

I had my first sitting done just before I found out I was pregnant (literally, we were going to go on vacation the next day for my birthday/our anniversary and my friend said to me at the parlor half way through my first session 'are you pregnant? your breasts are huge!' so I went home and took a test, sure enough...I was pregnant). I talked to my artist and he refuses to touch up or even do another sitting for the tattoo until I'm finished breast feeding.

Good question......I couldn't find any information about tattoos and breast feeding either :{ the only caution I found was regarding lead in the ink getting into breast milk.

I got a tattoo just before I got pregnant and I wanted to get it touched up after the baby came. I did some research and everything that I found said that as long as the tattoo isn't going anywhere near the breast or the milk supply or anything, you should be fine. It didn't mention anything about scabbing, but it makes complete sense to me. I would say if you are getting it in a really fleshy area, you should probably hold off until you are done nursing. But on an area like the ankle or something like that, you aren't AS likely to have a problem with scar tissue. I have personally decided to wait until I am done breast feeding to get my tattoo touched up. Perhaps ask your doctor and your artist about tattoos and breast feeding?

Hope this helps!

Thanks. I had been about to get a tattoo when I found out I was pregnant last year... knew I couldn't get one while pregnant so figured I'd wait till my b-day this year... Would never have even thought twice about my breast feeding and tattoos. Guess I'll be waiting longer.

I know several people who've gotten tattoos while breastfeeding and it was fine. I asked an artist if she can give me a tattoo while breast feeding and she said she doesn't tattoo breast feeding moms because our immune system is boosted and it can attack the ink and it will just scab over and flake off. So the danger isn't so much to your baby, but to the tattoo. I decided to just wait until I was done breast feeding to get my tattoo.
