Has anyone had a baby get thrush while they're breastfeeding? If so what does it look like and what symptoms did you/your breasts have?

My daughter and I had thrush off and on for the first 4 months of her life. My nipples and breasts hurt really bad. My nipples burned and itched and my breasts had terrible shooting pain after feedings. It was awful!
I worked with my naturopath and we cleared it up completely using some homeopathic remedies. Also, I've just discovered there's some acupressure points you can use to get rid of thrush as well. So, if you like the natural route (I avoid drugs unless I'm half dead!) there are great options out there.
Did you use Gingian Violet? It's all natural which is why I used it.
I did once but I hated how it dyed everything purple!! It didn't work for me either. It was gone for a few days/weeks but then came back. The homeopathics were a permanant fix for me (or at least I think so ... no sypmtoms for 2+ months)

Get out that black bra and run down to the grocery/or pharmacy and pick up some Genitian Violet. It's terribly messy, but works far better than the prescribed antibiotic. The antibiotic never worked for any of my 3. Why drug them up when this old world, homepathic stuff works!
Keep it away from kids, it could be a nightmare, think Liquid sharpie and that's what it looks like, but a purple one.
Dip the tip of a qtip into the bottle and make sure baby is in play clothes w/ a bib. First hour of it will be messiest. Paint your nipples, let dry, then do the inside of babys mouth, focusing on the inner cheeks up by the gums. Do this after you nurse so the milk doesn't wash it away. I only had to do this once a day for 3 days and it was gone.
The only reason it's not prescribed now is for cosmetic reasons, I believe. Boy have we gotten vain! ha ha
Ps.
Instant relief for your nipples when you put this on them!

your nipples will be pink, burning, itchy, and the babys mouth could be white and/or red patchy rash on their butts. we had it for a while then it went away... and it just came back. gentian violet worked for us, the nystatin didnt so much. and make sure you steralize nipples and paci's in between each use, THEN once thrush is gone i recommend replacing them.

And make sure you wash your nipples before each feeding and sterilize pacificers frequently if you are using them. That's what caused my little one to keep getting reinfected.

Thrush Symptoms:
Fussy at the breast
White spots in mouth (not always)
Sore nipples (not always)
Can occur more often when one of you has been on an antibiotic. Ways to combat this is to give your infant a probiotic.
Solution for Thrush:
Use Gingian Violet (from the drug store over the counter) for up to 4 days twice a day in the babies mouth and on your nipples. It's more effective than what the doctors prescribe and has no side effects (it does stain what it touches so use bras you don't like and apply with care).

I've gone through it. Bub's can have white spots not just on their tongue but on the roof and sides of their mouths. Don't check right after you've fed them though LOL I think it can make your nipples a little itchy too. It can also pass right though the baby and cause a nasty nappy rash which needs to be treated with an antifungal cream. I had an oral gel for my babies that I also put on my nipples to treat the thrush and avoid any cross-contamination.

even if the baby has thrush and your nipples are not infected, the dr. will treat both of you anyway to avoid transferring it back and forth. thrush is just a yeast infection and can happen anytime you have moisture...that's why we have to be careful of using nursing pads that hold in the moisture..just a thought. good luck!

according to a book i got thrush needs to be taken care of through medication but not just for you but the baby as well because even if you get rid of it he can give it back to you and vice versa. you should go to your ob/gyn or family doctor for you to get medicated and the ped for your baby because if its thrush you have to be medicated simultaneously. good luck.

My son got it when he was a few weeks old. His tongue was white. My nipples hurt a bit when he nursed, it was kinda like a burning feeling. Usually it goes away on it own. I tried medication and it didn't work. It wasn't that bad although some get it really bad. Instead of trying more meds i just let it run its course. It never came back, last about a month. If ur nipples are really sore though i would consider meds but mine were ok.
