My baby girl is almost 3 months old, when she was about 15 days old breastfeeding went from painfree to painful. Since then I've been battling stupid thrush which ended with horribly cracked nipples which would bleed and I would cry daily from the pain.

Well finally i've started to heal and one nipple is completely healed, not one crack at all and now i see how wonderful nursing is.

How about you ladies? Aren't you glad you kept up with it through the dark times and now see how wonderful it is?

Oh yes, I remember the toe curling pain and the tears. But I was SOO determined to keep going and I'm so glad I did. I fed my 1st for 3 years and my 2nd is now 9 months.

I always congratulate Mums who get through the 1st few months.

Ginny That is AMAZING! Way to go for you and your daughter! I've only had mastitis once and a yeast infection a couple of times. With my oldest I had a recurrent clogged duct and I can remember begging her to nurse more often to clear it out! She was the only thing that could make the pain better :) I always tell new moms that are breastfeeding that the first six weeks are complete hell, but it gets better and better everyday until you look back and think aww that wasn't so bad was it? I am amazed at what becoming a mother has turned me into and the joys that breastfeeding both infants and toddlers has brought to my life.

I nursed through mastitis several times, but the worse thing was having to nurse through having the flu and later through a sickness bug - just having to prop myself up while sweating with fever and cold and feeling so rotten.... and being amazed that my baby didn't get ill or get put off feeding. There are hard times but it is worth it.

My appendix ruptured when my daughter, my third child, was a week old. I spent 9 days in the hospital totally drugged up, catheterized, unable to eat for 5 of those days. I pumped and dumped through the horrible pain until they gave me the all clear to start letting her have my milk, and to my amazement when I finally went home from the hospital she latched right on again and started nursing like there had been no interruption. Amazing.

It is amazing what we can do when we put our mind to it.

For the first week my husband would have to put our daughter onto my breast for me. I was in so much pain I would have to squeeze the arms of my chair. I would cry the ENTIRE time she ate... I felt so guilty for covering her in tears. But we did it. Not a drop of formula has touched my daughters lips. (She is now 10 weeks). Despite have a canister of it that was given as a gift. I keep the can of formula now as incentive- I want it to expire without me ever having to open it :)

Now I look forward to every feeding. Becoming a Mother has been more empowering than I ever thought possible. Its the most rewarding job!

I cried almost every latch. I had cracked, bloody nipples. I am still missing a chunch from the left breast. I have had mastitis twice (That was worse than labour). I hated those early weeks of nursing. But I also didn't want to fail. I had so many people eagar with formula ready and I couldn't let them win. And I had the wonderful encouragement from my father.

Soon enough, it was nursing that I found to be the most tranquil part of my day. I am so happy I stuck too it!

Now my little girl is 14 months. And we are still nursing. We love it. My Dh jokes that our daughter will never give it up, that I will have to follow her to college! She is happiest after a nursing session and a cuddle in between mommy and daddy before bed.

yes I never had thrush thank goodness but have had a bad cut as baby used my nipple as a chew toy once but am very happy I didn't stop b/c of my pain.

yeah my daughter killed my nipples for the first two weeks of her life... she made my nipples bleed, and i would try not to scream every time she latched on!! her mouth was so small, she had a hard time latching on, but we both got better at it, and after those 2 weeks, i was relieved when it got better. I had breastfed my son before though, so there was no doubt in my mind that i was going to stick it out and breastfeed my little princess :)
