To pump or not too pump?!

I just weaned by 16 mos old and now I'm in pain! I was on a forced over night away from him and he went w/o nursing (which is really fine and I wanted to stop soon anyway...) so this was a good time but now I'm not sure if I should pump once a day or not?!?! The last time I pumped was 25 hours ago and now I'm really hurting, no leaking just really sore. Anybody else been in this situation...what do you recommend? Pumping a little here and there or trying to tough it out? THANKS!

It takes about 72 hours for the breasts to equal the demand, so in 3 days the swelling should go down and get much better. Ibuprofen for the discomfort.

I know this sounds weird but it works. cold cabbage leaves also stop pumping like autumn said, you'll keep producing milk, just express a little bit of milk to relieve the pressure but not to release the milk. you'll be sore and engorged for a few days but it'll be worth it in the end. just make sure you do express a little bit otherwise it could turn ugly. good luck!

Thanks ladies! I finally gave in and pumped 45 mins ago! I got 175 ML and that was from 26 hours worth...so now I'll hold off again for that long and see how bad it get's. I only pumped w/ my first baby and dryed up rather quickly so I thought if I pumped here and there it would too dry up but I'll try and hold off. The pressure was just getting to be so much and nobody had responded :) Thanks!

If you keep pumping you are going to keep producing milk, and then you will never be able to stop! You have to let your milk supply dry up. It may be painful, but it will only last a little while. Take a hot shower, massage your breasts, put warm compresses on them, all of those things will help.

I wouldn't pump, but get in a hot shower and massage your breasts. this should help the pain by releasing some of the pressure.
