Stephanie, I totally understand the concern... it can be a challenge. Beaches can be a great experience for the whole family and it provides unique sensory experiences for kids. Just don't forget, spraying sunblock is always a fast easy protection. In addition, there are great swimwear outfits and hats which cover most of a childs body. Another great idea is to fill a small blow up pool with water and place it underneath a large umbrella. This can provide great shade for water play, meals and maybe even a nap if your child is an unusually good sleeper. Apply sunscreen every hour... or every other hour. Even if it's spf 90 and says 8 hour. Apply regularly. Also, put a hat on the baby. Preferably one with a chin strap so it doesn't blow off, or get yanked off easily. And if you're actually considering being out ALL day... make sure you have a plan for how she can get a nap... in the shade. I have a 4 year old and a 20 month old, and I still don't do all day trips with my girls. I take them lots of places, but generally only plan on staying a few hours. Sometimes only 1 hour, other times we make it 3 hours. After that much time out, the LO is ready for a nap.

What about day trips with an 8 month old? I would like to be able to go to the beach or lake. I am so scared of her getting a sunburn, though. Even with the sunscreen on, it's not good for her to be in the sun for very long. Any tips on having a beach day with an 8 month old?
