Has anyone else had trouble loosing weight while breast feeding?

After losing all of my pregnancy weight in the first month I then put on about 6lb that I have not been able to shift. Each time I lose a couple of lbs I turn into a crazy food monster and can't stop eating until I'm +8-10lb, then I'll drift back to get steady at +6lb only to repeat the cycle.

This has been going on for more than a year now (my son is 15mo) and it's starting to really frustrate me.

I plan on nursing my son until he's ready to self-wean but would really like to lose the extra lbs before then..... am I doing something wrong? Are there any secrets to shedding those final lbs????

Thanks all for your thoughts on this, it's been really encouraging reading your posts (although still a little frustrating because it looks like I'll be stuck with the extra 8lbs for the time being).

@Rebekah, I'm not on the mini-pill (periods haven't returned either) and like you, I do daily exercise, mainly cardio but also some weights / resistance training.

@Julie, I hear you about being hungry!!

@Stephanie, a juice cleanse might be what I need to kick-start the weight loss after weaning, if I were to do it now I'd instantly put the weight back on (I have tried a few 'diets' while BF, mainly centred around eating well but I guess I just don't eat enough because I go insane for junk food after a while). At +8lb I find I can keep eating well, if I achieve a lower weight than that it's a recipe for a sugar binge.

Since I want my LO to wean at his own pace it looks like I could be in my bigger clothes for a while yet...

I have never lost a single pound while nursing (even with daily cardio and weights).... BUT, as soon as I wean (at least with my first two kids), the weight just falls off.

Another thought: Are you on the mini-pill? I've always taken the mini-pill while nursing so I wonder sometimes if maybe THAT'S the reason I do not lose weight while nursing... b/c I can lose 10-15lbs as soon as I wean and get off of the pill.

I gained weight! Don't worry, nursing makes you hungry. Lose the wight when you are done nursing. Just be sure to eat well and sneak some exercise in. I lost ten pounds after I stopped nursing my daughter at eighteen months.

It sounds like you may benefit from a juice cleanse. After your son is weaned, you could try it. Maybe you'll want to talk to your doctor first, to make sure, though.
Do you have a juicer?
You could do a 10 day fast of drinking only fresh juice, that would likely help you loose the extra pounds you want to. Also, maybe check your diet for excess sugar and try to eliminate any processed foods. How is your digestion? A probiotic can help speed thigns up and get your intestinal track into tip top shape.
I love juicing, and when I do I feel great! One of my favorites is carrot, apple and beet juice. You can put the beet greens right in, and add a piece of fresh ginger and 1/2 a lemon (sans rind) for joint health and ph balance. Also, juicing just makes me feel healthier. Don't worry too much about a few extra pounds, instead focus on a healthy diet and regular exercise. Good luck!
