My daughter is 5 months old and we are having a hard time getting her to eat solids. She has the mechanics down, but she hates everything but breastmilk. We cannot get her to take anything else, not even small amounts of cereal mixed in it. Has anyone else had this problem before? Are there any hints that might help? Thank you.

My daughter was 9 months old before she had any solids. I started her then b/c everytime I would eat anything, she would open her mouth as I would take bites. I first gave her mashed bananas, then avocados (she loved those! ate those until about 15 months!) We never bought the expensive baby foods from the store.

Even then it was just a learning experience. Breastmilk was still her main source of nurishment.

Most doctors will tell you at baby's 4 month check up to start baby cereal - not necessary & that baby cereal doesn't have very much nutritional value. They need mommy's milk! - recommended exclusively for the first 6 months. Don't rush the solids. Enjoy these "easier" days of just breastfeeding...not having to clean-up the messy foods!!

Yes...skip the solids and EBF until your daughter is able to pick up food herself. My son hated solids at 5 months and still does at 1 year. but he likes to feed himself. he isn't great at it yet, so i wish i offered table food instead of the jar stuff much earlier!!

Signs your baby is ready to start (look for all these signs):
Baby can sit up well without support.
Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex and does not automatically push solids out of his mouth with his tongue.
Baby is ready and willing to chew.
Baby is developing a “pincer” grasp, where he picks up food or other objects between thumb and forefinger. Using the fingers and scraping the food into the palm of the hand (palmar grasp) does not substitute for pincer grasp development.
Baby is eager to participate in mealtime and may try to grab food and put it in his mouth.

Don't worry about it. She doesn't need solids right now. Breast milk should be the primary source of nutrition within the first year anyways. Food is just all about learning for the time being. Don't rush it or eating could become a negative experience for her. Take your time and let her take her time.

my 9 month old still doesn't eat very many solids.. just maybe a taste of whatever i eat if she's interested. i'd say 99% of her nutrition is still through breastmilk. the apa and who recommend breastmilk only for the first six months of a child's life. solids are unnecessary so young. my daughter and i are practicing baby led weaning where she lets me know she's ready for solids by picking up food, putting it in her mouth, chewing it and swallowing. anything less than that and i'd say she's biologically not ready. if your daughter loves breastmilk so much (which is what they are hardwired to like) then just let her have that. nutritionally it has everything she needs. not to mention comfort and antibodies.
