There is a great book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility. If you start charting your temperature every morning and changes in your cervix and fluid, then you'll know if you're ovulating. And you'll also know when to have intercourse if you prefer a boy or girl (80% accuracy). Good luck!

You can certainly get pregnant while breastfeeding (I have!) and it is possible to do so before your period returns regularly, BUT it depends if you are ovulating!

Some women have several periods before they start ovulating again, some have the opposite - they ovulate before they have a period. I think that at 7 months it's maybe pretty early to have your fertility return properly while breastfeeding (although some women do, especially if you are supplementing breastfeeds), but really it depends totally on the ovulation factor!

There are home ovulation test kits you can buy, but if you are serious about conceiving asap, I would get the gyno to check your hormone levels to see if your ovulation has returned. If you aren't ovulating yet, you can also encourage your fertility to return by making sure your baby regularly goes 4 hours between feeds, and especially at night, but really at 7 months your little person still needs to feed on demand, so probably best to ride it out for the time being and let your body tell you when it is ready.

Otherwise just hang out and enjoy your baby, and nature will certainly take it's course and bring you another one when your body is ready again! You will be very likely to have your fertility return to normal in the second year of your baby's life.
:-) Best of luck! :-)

I think the rule with this is pretty much just that all women are different. I have gotten pregnant twice while breastfeeding, once before my period started and once after about 3 cycles, the first time we tried. My cycles start back pretty much right after solids are firmly established. I know women who don't get a period back for 2 years, ANY breast stimulation at all holds off fertility for them. Being overweight or underweight can influence things as well and you could talk to your doctor about that if you think it could apply to you, but at 7 months postpartum, it's still pretty soon, you probably just need to wait a bit longer.

I had my 2nd child only 16 months after the first! I had 1 period, and there it was I was pregnant, after him i didn't have a period just fell pregnant with no. 3 and delivered just under 16 months later (overdue baby) I was not trying it just happened!
after falling so easily I tried to use a different form of preventative measure, an IUD, but with major migranes that I got that had to be removed, I had 2 cycles and fell pregnant! after no. 4 we chose to have no.5 when she was approx 6 months old but she was a dependant feeder, got my first cycle 2 weeks before bub's 1st b'day and conceived 2 days before her birthday! I was thrilled when my boy was born my family is complete!!!!
It is very possible to conceive while b/f if you have had a proper cycle you are ovulating, but this may still be irregular for a while! as Brittany said just have fun practising and you will get there with alot less stress!
GOOD LUCK!!!

hubby and i had just discovered we are expecting again. our son is 10 months old now and it was a bit of a shocker because i've only had about 2 real periods and none of which were recent. i dont know how far along i am but we will find out in 2 weeks. my son eats about 4-5 times a day and i've changed nothing about his pattern. we weren't trying at all. it just happened. anyways, it is possible but i don't think you should "play" with your childs eating. patience is key. have fun trying. ;) dont make it a chore. you will only stress yourself out and beat yourself up over it.
*UPDATE*: i am 7 weeks pregnant. how? no idea. it is possible!

you certainly can get pregnant while breastfeeding but i would consider the fact that your body takes about 18 months to fully recover from birth

Lol if it were up to me I would have 6 kids! I love the baby snuggles! My kids turned into daddys kids once they learned to sit.

I read somewhere that only about 5% of women actually ovulate before starting their periods back up. So yes, it is possible to get pregnant before it starts back up, but not highly likely. I got pregnant while breastfeeding, but my daughter was 20 months old, and my periods had started back up when she was 14 months old. She nursed at least once per night until 17 months. Didn't get pregnant until after she stopped the night nursings. Does your baby sleep at least one 6 hour stretch most nights? If not, he may just not be ready to share you with a new baby.

You do not have to have periods to become pregnant. I fell pregnant three times without a period. If you are having unprotected sex then you will fall pregnant eventually but the breast feeding will hinder you slightly. Talk to your GP and see what he suggests.
