Definitely do not want baby ingesting a petroleum product. Also, have to be safe with using any kinds of oils... if there is too much and baby were to ingest too much they could aspirate the oil into their lungs and that is very bad. So have to be very careful.
Actually what I would suggest in the absence of lanolin is actual breast milk. Express a little out and rub it over the nipple.

I'm sure that those few times are not enough to affect anything:) I just don't think it's good for continued use.

Thanks i wasn't sure if i could or not. I used it twice. Now I'm freaked out. I will be buying lanolin today.

NO!!! Vaseline is a petroleum product and NOT safe for baby. It can also cause more irritation that it helps. If you feel you absolutely must put an ointment on before getting more lanolin and use the vaseline, wash it off thoroughly before feeding (of course, that may cause more irritation). I have heard some people use a dab of vegetable oil or isn't available. Again, I would wash this off as baby could have an allergy (plus it probably tastes yucky). Try to get the lanolin asap.

I was told not to put Vaseline on them, but I do not remember why. I am pretty sure it was because babies aren't supposed to ingest it.
