Vitamin D

I have been breastfeeding my daughter, Rosabelle (who is now 4 months). When I took her to the doctor yesterday for her 4 month check up the doctor told me I should start giving her a vitamin d supplement because she does not get that through breast milk. Has anyone else been told this?

I think we gave it to her twice and stopped because she would just spit it out and I felt bad. She is out in the sun a lot. We live in Florida so it's not a problem. She is taken outside at school at least once a day as well.

my pediatrician told me to give these to my son also......i really never did....have you tasted it yourself? very nasty. a lot of people say it constipates their little ones. My son eats a wide variety of all types of foods, so i've never really given him vitamins. he took them for about a month at one time b/c he saw there were some at the store with a particular cartoon character on them, but now he doesn't take anything.

A new study showed that breast milk lacks Vit. D. I open the shades and let Madi get exposed to sunlight for 5-10 minutes each day. This allows her body to produce the necessary Vit. D.

I was told to give her the polyvisol drops. I couldn't believe it. Not that it's a big deal to give it to her. My boyfriend's mom is a lactation consultant and said she had never heard such a thing. It is surprising to me the lack of knowledge pediatricians have on breastfeeding.

Yes! I have been giving Vitamin D since my daughter was 1 week old. I've also been told not to have the baby out in the sun. They can burn easily and we should not be applying sunscreen until they are about 6 months of age because of the chemicals in the product.

This might sound dumb, but what is Rickets?
Her doctor mentioned the sun light, but because winter is just around the corner we don't get to stay outside for long. Even though Rosabelle would stay out all day if I let her.

My daughter is also 4 months and I was told the same thing at her check up. The doctor told me that it is because breast milk does not have enough vitamin D. The reason she wanted me to give her the supplement was to prevent Rickets. She also told me that if your baby gets outside in the sun during the day you may not need the supplement because you get vitamin D from sun light.
