Hello, my baby will be 2 months next week and since her first month checkup my doctor gave me a vitamin supplement named, Tri-Vitamin with Flouride. He told me I can give it to her daily or every other day. The vitamin is basically given to supplement vitamins A, D, C, and floruride. I've read some articles online and it seems as if everyone has their opinion about supplementing. I was quite hesitant in giving it to her at first, but my husband and I decided it will be best to follow the doctor's suggestions. Is there anyone out there that is also supplementing their child and can give me some advice.

Thanks ladies for sharing your opinion!! We went to the doctor today and after asking more questions, we feel confident in giving her the supplement.

I started giving my son Vit-D liquid drops the day I came home from the hospital. Vit D is SO important in promoting healthy teeth and bones and it also help absorb other vitamins and minerals. Our culture doesn't get enough of it (just like folic acid) in our diets and so the supplement is important to give your infant as you youself don't get enough, they won't recieve enough from your breastmilk. And you can get so many different kinds some are quite $$$ but you really don't need to spend much and I taste most liquids and things I give my son... the Vit D tastes fruity and sweet. Sometimes I will give it to him and stik his soother in after so he can savour the taste and he associtates the taste with being calmed bye his pacifier.

They only need it until breastmilk is no longer their main source of nutrients, so until you out them on moslty solids or formula. Good luck and stick with it!

We didn't do any supplements. The doctor gave us the Tri-Vitamin when my older daughter weaned, but it was because I was concerned about her getting enough nutrition since she was no longer getting breastmilk. I fought with her for a few days but decided it wasn't worth the battle (it tastes pretty bad, apparently). Depending on your lifestyle/environment your baby might get enough Vitamin D from the sun, we live in Florida so I wasn't worried about Vitamin D deficiency. It seems like you've made the right choice for your family but I wanted to give the other side of the story since we don't supplement and both of mine seem perfectly healthy.

I have been giving my daughter a daily Vitamin D supplement since she was a few weeks old (she is now 9 months). In your reading you might have seen that research has shown Vit D seems to be the one thing that does not pass through breastmilk in big enough quantities for babes. We all (babies and adults) need Vit D to help strengthen our bones. The role of Vit D is to help the body absorb calcium properly... and of course calcium helps to make and keep our bones strong.
In rare circumstances, babies who do not receive enough Vit D can develop Rickets. It does not happen often, but there are still cases occurring in developed countries (I am in Canada and I know it still happens here).
I am not sure though about the other vitamins or flouride. It is my understanding that if you have good nutrition, breastmilk does provide everything else (minus vit D) that your baby needs to grow and develop.
Good luck on your decision making. I know it can be tough sometimes!
Also, I love your profile pic; it's beautiful :)
