Hi everybody! I am brand new in these forums, and I am feeling kind of bad so any kind word of wisdom is desperately needed here!!
My baby is 3 months old now, he is exclusively breastfed since day one but also, since day one he has been VERY fussy!! He calms down when you pick him up but, after eating he is calm for a while then starts arching his back and kicking his legs, which leads me to the conclusion that he has a bit of pain or extreme discomfort from gas.
Well, this is my dilemma, I do NOT want to stop breastfeeding but it seems now that that will be my only choice. I do not eat anything consistently in my diet however, I do incline for wheat toast, eggs, vegetables, a little fruit, tons of water.....I seldom eat any dairy, and he just seems to be the same since he was born, regardless of what I eat or do. I started feeding him on one side only each feeding to see if that helped with his gas but nothing. Well, last night after a painful day, I gave him a bottle with NEOCATE formula, he finished and was SO HAPPY, he even fell asleep on his own, which never ever happens unless you rock him!
I do not want to stop breastfeeding until its time, but I want my baby to be happy, to get enough rest and be happy!
Any words of wisdom out there?

Thank you all so much in advance!

This is acid reflux and you do not have to give up breast feeding to get him to take medication. My daughter had gaviscon powder in her bottle but the packet did say if breastfeeding express a little milk and add the powder to the milk and gently use a spoon and tip into the babies mouth. It is not impossible to continue breast feeding if that is what you want to do. Go and see your GP today I can tell you it will be like having a different baby when he has the right meds.

well, just to follow up, yesterday was a full day of formula feeding and my baby was bothered to the extreme, he had gas! My instinct is telling me that he is not allergic to milk's protein, that he does not have reflux and that I HAVE TO BURP HIM EVERY 5 MINUTES! I went back to breast feed him this morning and gave him only what he asked for (which was a total of maybe 15 minutes) WITH A LOT OF BURPING IN BETWEEN and............right now he is SOUND ASLEEP!
I am going to keep up the constant burping and supply ONLY on demand and keep the formula feeding for when I have to be away from him (I did a LOT of pumping with my first boy but now the pump is EXTREMELY uncomfortable, so no more pumping for me!).
I will keep you updated.

Thank all of you for your insights, I will do some more research based on the links you guys provided. Thanks so much again!!!
My baby has been on formula this whole day and he has been soooo happy!!! so, I will completely eliminate dairy and any foods that contain any trace of the same....I am thinking now I will do this (actually started today) and will keep him on the formula for one week, then see how it goes. I also have to look into the milk supply/over supply issue because I think this is another factor.
Thanx so much again!

Many moms find that they're babies instantly sleep after a bottle of formula. Normally it's because formula overfills their tummies and they're so full they go to sleep (think how you feel after Thanksgiving). Some babies are fussy and that's how they are for a while. Have you tried baby wearing? It has worked wonders for both of my girls when they go through fussy periods. If you want to try an elimination diet, you don't have to stop nursing. Not nursing for several weeks will cause supply issues. Read Lori's link about food sensitivities. Many moms actually have an overactive letdown and/or oversupply that causes baby to be extremely gassy and moms mistake this for a food allergy. Continue to make sure that baby thoroughly empties the first breast before offering the second, nurse on one breast per feeding or block feed.

It sounds to me like a food allergy. Dairy is the most common, and since you mention you fed him Neocate and he was quite happy afterwards, that might be it. The most common food allergens are the proteins found in milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts), peanuts, wheat and soy.

Even though you said you seldom eat dairy, it is found in many many foods, and if your little one is allergic you will need to completely remove ALL dairy from your diet. That means in addition to no milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and cream: you also have to avoid many breads, many crackers and cookies, some lunch meats, some hotdogs, and anything else that even contains a little bit of cow milk.

Read through the link here on food sensitivities, and check out the other link on Hidden Dairy.

My 18 month old baby is allergic to Cow's Milk and is sensitive to too much soy, and apple juice doesn't settle well with her either. It took me a while to identify what was causing her problems, but now that I've cut out ALL dairy, the main sources of soy, and no apple juice she's doing great.

I would NOT feed him formula. Feeding him formula can sabotage supply. Supply works on supply and demand. No demand, your breasts don't get that stimulation to make milk. A couple of ideas:

-Overactive letdown. Your letdown may be too fast. It can also mimic acid reflux

-Growth spurt:

Here is more information about fussy babies. I honestly don't think that formula is the answer

Hi Michelle, thank you for your reply! About the acid reflux, I have actually fed him upright and kept him in a 'sitting position' for at least 30 mins. but that did not seemed to help. He also spits sometimes, it is very sporadic but when he does it he does not seem to be bothered at all by it. I have kept him today, the whole day, on that formula and he has been SO HAPPY!!! just chilling and absorbing everything that surrounds him! I have come up with a plan of action, I will feed him formula for 2 to 3 weeks and in the meantime I will COMPLETELY CLEANSE myself, and by this I mean to only eat fruits, vegetables and certain kinds of seeds (excluding everything gassy) and tons of water, this way, after those 2-3 weeks, I will resume breastfeeding and reintroduce various foods into my diet. Hopefully this will help me pinpoint what has been causing my little one all of this bothersome gas!
Thanx again for your insight! I will definitely comment to my pediatrician.
:-)

It sounds like acid reflux. My daughter is 7 months now but from the time she was 2 months she constantly arched her back & cried, a lot. The crying would in turn cause her to swallow more air causing bad gas. Her doctor started her on an acid reducer medication and it made all the difference in the world. If your hesitant about medication, you can do things like feeding her as upright as possible and keep her sitting upright for at least a half hour after eating. Also, I found with my daughter I layed her down on one of the miniature boppy pillows to sleep, and it kept her acid pain at bay for her to get real rest. And I know seeing your little one in pain is so disheartening but I believe breast is best and it may just take a little tweaking of your diet and yours a babys feeding habits but things will get better :)
