I feel as though I am getting a cold. My son has had a stuffy nose for the last week and a half. I am breast feeding and I remember the horrors of getting sick while I was pregnant not being able to take anything. I was just wondering if I am still not aloud to take any medication while I am bf my little man. And if I am what kind of stuff would be okay and not get into my breast milk.

There is actually a fair bit more you can take when breastfeeding than while pregnant. You are okay to take normal cough syrup, although I would look for something that does not have alcohol in it. You can also take antihistamines if you need to. Try to steer clear of decongestants though, as they can cause your milk to dry up.

Tylenol cold is fine as well, as are cough drops and throat lozenges.

If you're nervous about a particular product, ask your doctor about it.

If you don't like the idea of taking cough syrup, try hot lemon tea with honey in it, or just a spoon of honey, for a cough.

I also find breath-right nasal strips really helpful for sleeping at night when I have a stuffy nose.

Unfortunately there is not a lot you can take while breastfeeding. I usually have to live off panadol and use vicks or eucalyptus oil on my chest to help with the stuffiness. Steam baths with some eucalyptus or vicks in the water helps to break up congestion.

I do take nose drops but apparently you are not even supposed to use those but I cant handle the not breathing part. If you dont want to use them you can use saline drops which are safe. At the health food store you can by fenugreek tablets which help with colds and the wonderful side effect of them is that they make you produce more breast milk lol.

If in doubt ask the pharmacist as they will tell you what you can or cannot use. Hope some this helps :)
