im trying to wean my son off the boob, and he hates any kind of formula...and i deff. have run out of milk to pump(1oz in a half hour) i was thinking maybe lactaid milk b/c its not really milk....but he's going to be a yr. old in a couple weeks, and i wondered if you go straight to whole milk the day they turn a yr. old or if you wean it in....what to do??

I went straight to milk for my I gave her about 8oz at each mean and she did great. I was worried about hormones and steroids so I still give her organic milk. My favorite is Horizon organic whole milk with DHA/Omega 3's. She's loved it from the start and I know that it's good for her body and her brain.

Breast milk obviously... but failing that moving onto whole cows milk, for snacks etc but I would offer water in a sippy cup at all snacks & meals too to make sure they keep up their fluids. As long as they are getting yogurt & cheese you don't need to force cows milk on them

Whole cow's milk (because they need the fat), goat milk. Raw milk (unpastureized) is better as pp mentioned. But you definately would want to get to know the farmer and farm before buying. Soy mimics estrogen so the tide is beginning to sway against that. But as pps mentioned they don't technically need milk if the rest of their diet gets them what they need.

It is totally fine to give a 1yr old Whole milk, they dont need any bottles of it though, just milk at a meal or whatever. The rest of the nutrients they get will be from the solids they eat. They need the whole milk though because of the fat content in it. They shouldnt be getting 1% or 2% until at least 2yrs of age.

I have the same dilemma. I am giving my son organic milk for the time being. As far as soy milk, it messes with your hormones so, that's not good for boys or girls, as far as long term use. Babies drink soy formula b/c they can't drink regular formula other than that it's not really good for you either. My son has allergies to grains and can't have cake for his first birthday (in 5 days) so I'm getting him used to milk so he can have pudding instead. After that I'm not sure if I'll stick with that or not. Lactaid is still milk with Lactase enzyme added but the Lactaid brand gets milk from cows that aren't treated with artificial growth hormones, which is good. So much to debate.....

I second Kate. Once your child is a year and no longer needs formula or breast absolutely, milk isn't necessary. My oldest rarely drinks milk but his pediatrician said that was perfectly fine as long he ate a varied diet and had yogurt/cheese. (He was breastfed until 20 months.)

Babies don't need cow's milk. He will get plenty of nutrients if he eats a varied diet. Pasteurized/homogenized milk (i.e. everything you can buy at the store) is especially bad. Just give him plenty of different foods, lots of meat and eggs and cheese if you want. He'll be fine without milk. My DD (18 mo.) has never had milk in her life (she is nursing though) and she's fine.

My pediatrician recommended whole milk for my daughter - who's 10 months old. I am gradually increasing the milk/decreasing the formula in her bottles, by one ounce at a time, every few days.

With my first daughter she has stomach isssues with formula. We had her on soy formula. So as soon as she turned 1, we just bought soy milk at the grocery store and gave her that. I wasn't breastfeeding, so maybe that is your issue. Is he weaned from your breast yet? I wouldn't go to formula since he's 1 already. You can just give him milk - whatever type.

Consult with pediatrician as to which milk but start switching by mixing your expressed milk with the new milk and gradually increase the percentage of new milk. I started my youngest on soy milk mixed with my expressed milk when I couldn't seem to leave the baabysitter enough pumped milk.

My son stopped nursing on his own at 7 months and my pediatrician recommended giving him either 1% or 2% cows millk, but for a 8 oz bottle it was 4 oz milk mixed with 4 oz water. Straight milk can be tough for them to digest. Though you can also mix half and half soy milk to water. My son prefered that to the millk. Hope this helps.
