What to do for baby's teething pain?

My son, Gunner, is 3 1/2 mo. old and is starting to teeth. He's drooling like crazy, blowing little spit bubbles and tries to knaw his hand off. I strictly breastfeed him and have heard not to give them Orajel because they may not be able to latch on. I'm wondering if the teething tablets work the same way. Not sure, but I don't want his little gums to hurt him - but I don't want him to not take to me either. Will take any advise,

Thanks so much!

My son got his first tooth at 5 mo, and has been early with them since (he's got 14 teeth at 14 mo now). The teething tablets are fantastic. I use them only when I know he's hurting, and they really seem to help him.

We use a few things with my son. He wears a teething necklace 100% of the time that seems to help along with camillia drops.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful comments.  I gave him some Tylenol yesterday simply because I had some handy and none of the other things yet.  It seems to work wonders!  He wasn't fussy after just a short amount of time.  I'm getting teething tablets tommorrow and we are going to try them out.  He seems to have fussiness in spells and I know that sometimes it is gas pain.  I can give him Mylecon (sp?) and he will be great almost instantly and then will have a dirty diaper not long after.

Jessica, in answer to your question about spitting up.  No, he doesn't - hardly ever, it's very rare anyhow.  I feel very fortunate about that also.  I have a son that is six now and he got his first tooth when he was Gunners age and continued to get them very fast after the first.  So I'm expecting little Gunner to have one soon.

Again, thanks for all your advice!  I love this Breastfeeding for Moms.  Before this I didn't know anything!!

Teething tablets are great, and I wouldn't worry about Orajel and latching. Also I sure the baby is teething? Does your baby spit up frequently? If so it could be GERD, muy son had this and so do most babies, it presents itself as early teething drroling, fussiness, crabby, and spitting up, not badly. But basically the baby has heartburn and is uncomfortable, you could try some infant gas drops for this, but they will still continue to drool. And also if Orajel, and or gas drops doesn't seem help with the drooling maybe have your babies ears checked out, sometimes they will drool and be cranky if they have fluid in their ears. Just throwing out all the possibilities, becaus sometimes other ailments present themselves as early teething, and you never know.

We've never had any problems using Orajel and nursing. Also, Tylenol before bed has been helping. Lots of teething toys, a good variety of ones you can cool, different textures & shapes. Also, the mesh teething bags are handy (but a bit of a pain to clean). Good luck!

I use teething tablets, they work like a charm. They're inert so you can't hurt them with it. I give my 7mo old 2 at a time and my 2 year old 4-5.

We have used orajel when he was acting like he was in a lot of pain at night. It was seriously like magic, 2 seconds after it hit his gums, he would fall over sound asleep. It was basically just the pain that was keeping him awake.  Basically I don't think we needed to worry about him latching on too much at the point.  By the next time he woke up, it had worn off already.

We used the teething tablets once, I don't think they have the same instant gratification but they need help with the pain.  I don't think the are numbing like the orajel.

cold teething rings. Breanna was a little older when we started this and those safety feeders with frozen strawberries worked really really well.
