I had to switch my baby strictly to bottles since she was having issues taking them at all. Now to keep my supply up with her demand! I was using oatmeal, but this has lost its effect. I've heard of fenugreek, blessed thistle, alfalfa and mother's milk tea for increasing supply... which is the best and has the least amount of side effects on my baby and me? Recommendations please! :)

I should add: You may want to reintroduce nursing at the breast once baby is more used to bottles. There is nothing like nursing to help production!

I used fenugreek and blessed thistle. When I first started, I did notice a maple syrup smell to my breath, but either I got used to it or it went away. No negative side effects on me or baby.

I've used mothers milk tea and fenugreek. I like the tea better. Everyone is different when it comes to side effects but for me the fenugreek upset my stomach and made me gassy. I did smell like maple syrup, but there are worse things to smell like. :o) I did see an increase in my milk supply when I drank the tea, but you need to drink a lot of it. I had to drink 5-6 cups a day. If you buy the fenugreek tablets you need to take twice as much as the bottle says too. If you talk to a lactation consultant they will be more than happy to help you and give you other ideas.

I took a ton of fenugreek when my first son was born and coupled that with the oatmeal. I had a breast reduction surgery 18 years ago and so had to really force my body to make more milk from the ducts I had left that were not damaged from my surgery. I also pumped a TON, but you're already doing that. I'm preggo again and this time I purchased some Mother's Milk tea to drink along with taking the fenugreek and eating oatmeal. I wouldn't stop eating oatmeal, but maybe add whatever supplement you decide to take on top of the regimen and see if that works. I have heard that pumping alone will eventually lead to a decrease in supply, as pumps just aren't as efficient as babies at getting milk out. Maybe after a little while you could try to get her back on the breast, even if just part time? I had a friend who had to do strictly bottles with her premie until he was about 4 months old and then they started doing a combo of bottles and breast and then he went strictly to breast where he still is a year later! Good luck to you!

Oh, PS - I didn't have any side effects with either the oatmeal or fenugreek, but I've heard people say that your skin or urine can start smelling like maple syrup when you take a lot of fenugreek. Didn't happen with me, but apparently it's totally normal and no cause for alarm. :)
