Will my milk dry up if i start birth control?

I just had a question to see what everyone else was doing. My son is 5 months old now and i want to start the pill. Lots of people i talked to said it will make my milk dry up. Does anyone have any advice if i should wait or start the pill now.

The mini pill (progesterone only ) is safe as long as your milk supply is well established. Avoid pills containing estrogen as they will lower your milk supply! When you stop breastfeeding you need to go back to using a regular pill because the minipill will not give you enough protection

I am on Mirena, and I highly recommend it. It did not do anything to my supply, and I do not have to worry about taking a pill at a certain time.

(It also does not cause you to gain weight, like the pill does on occasion)

I am on the mini pill too and had no problems with milk supply. It was recommended by my midwife.

I am on the mini pill, which contains progestegen only, this will not affect your milk supply. My doctor advised the regular pill will dry up your milk.

I went on the pill when Emma was 6 months (the same pill I was taking before I stopped to have a baby) and it didn't affect my milk supply at all. I was/am taking TriCyclen Lo and I'm still nursing and my baby is 13 months now. I didn't have any trouble at all! :)

You can only use a certain kind of pill that is safe to take while breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor to help you pick one that's right for you and it shouldn't dry up your milk.
