Has anyone taken Zoloft while breastfeeding? It is one of those meds that are in the middle... did you have side affects to taking this. I have postpardum depression and need to weigh the pros and cons before I take Zoloft or stop breastfeeding. Please help!

consider bioidentical progesterone cream for depression instead. Google progesterone deficiency. You might be surprized to learn those "other" annoyances are related. Its common while nursing, and bioidentical progesterone is perfectly safe (unlike synthetic hormones) and in my experience WAAY more effective.

I found the book Medications and Mother's Milk by Dr. Thomas Hale to be my Bible when it comes to nursing and taking medications. He also has a website that you can look through @ http://66.230.33.248/cgi-bin/discus/disc...

(If you've bought something through Amazon.com, you can look through his book free at Amazon.)

I dealt with PPD after giving birth to my son in November.  My OB put me on Zoloft as well.  I only took it for a few days because it made me feel weird.  It made me nauseous and sluggish.  At one point I went to the ER because I wasn't sure what was going on.  It did not have an affect on my milk supply or my baby.  I got off of it and tried to tough it out.  3 1/2 months later I still have "breakdown" moments.  Hang in there.  It will get better, I promise!

i was on zoloft and breastfeeding for about 6 weeks and it didn't work for me, i'm now trying lexepro...the zoloft did not affect my supply at all and the lexepro doesn't seem to be either

Wait, your doc put you on Lexapro while breastfeeding?  I was on lexapro before I got pregnant and was taken off of it and now am oon Zoloft.  Lexapro was a big no-no from my doc.  How much are you on?

Bridgette,
For a second "medical" opinion on taking Zoloft and breastfeeding - call Motherisk ( 416-813-6780 )  It is an organization out of The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and they have a world-renowned database of drugs and their interactions for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.  I've called them about two of my medications and they've been really helpful.  You can check out the website at: http://www.motherisk.org/women/index.jsp

Hope that helps,

Wendy

I have been on Zoloft since my 6 week pp. I think it is best to take the meds. I did the same contemplating. I also needed anti-depression meds while pregnant, and went on-off-on, becasue I was so unsure of my choices.

But inconclusion I now look back and totally believe that a happy, content, stable mom is so vauable and all of my Dr,'s ok'ed Zoloft, but only up to 100mg. My Ob reccomends Zoloft while breastfeeding to all of his PP patients. I think it is a personal issue whether to do it or not.

When I'm done breastfeeding I'm probably going to try something stronger. But I have a history or depression and a lot of stressfull issues currently and that is most likely why I need something stronger.

I have heard so many people bennifit from Zoloft, and that do NOT become life-long users.

So, bottom line..if someone is recommending Zoloft when breastfeeding. I would take it.

If your supply of milk is decressing, just drink more, it should make you produce more in a few days, or there's mother milk tea, which is wonderful and you can buy it at health food stores

I am on Zoloft and still breastfeeding and other than making me sleepy, which I need to do anyway, it's been great.  My supply hasn't been affected by it either.

Did it affect your milk supply at all? I am not an over producer and usually only have enough for her.
