I watched Extreme Home Makeover last night, and was in tears, over a families loss of their 11 year family member to bullying. Statistics state that over 160,000 children stay home from school everyday out of fear of being bullied. Having been bullied myself when I was younger, I know its a silent terror that a child wrestles with daily, not sure who to turn to, where is it safe...what actions to take. We as a nation need to realize this is a HUGE epidemic that is not only NOT going to go away, but fester, grow and take over the school systems, if we as communities dont come together, and in one voice support our children. My daughter has autism, and has been bullied at school. Now on the other side, as a parent of a child being bullied, I feel absolutely helpless, I am not there, I dont see it, etc. At times I feel the teachers are to blame for some of the bullying. Putting my child in situations that open doors for bullying to happen. Having a special needs child around 5 other grades of "normal" children. Does anyone have any sites, or suggestions as to how we as parents can strengthen our resolve in our schools to stand up to the bullying?
