I got lucky because there was a playgroup starting up in my neighborhood with other kids the same age as my daughter. But if there is no existing playgroup, do what my friend did...go to the local parks, libraries, barnes & nobles, starbucks, etc. and start chatting up the other moms with kids the same age(s) as your kid(s). There are most likely lots of other moms out there who want to hang out with someone like you, but maybe they are shy.

Being a new stay at home mom this one is tough for me as well. Depending on where you are at (if you are near a big city) there are a couple of websites you can try to meet local moms and possibly start a play group. I'm really rural so my only option in my area is the local MOPs group and while good does cost $30 a year to join. However for the return on investment it is pretty good. They do one meeting a month, one mom's only night out a month, and a play group once a month. So for essentially three meetings a month it's a decent value. You can find your local club at www.mops.org. or there is http://www.momsclub.org/links.html#Illin... not sure how that program works but maybe it would be more what you are looking for. Hope this helps.
