Hi I'm Jasmine and I have three children, Chris, Victoria and Sean. My oldest son is going to be confirmed this spring and I have been his group's Confirmation Team Leader. Things certainly are different from when we were young! Many of the children in Chris' group don't seem to even attend Mass regularly and aren't too thrilled about confirmation -- they are just going through the motions because their parents want it. I am so conflicted about this and don't think those children should be receiving the sacrament! Any thoughts or similiar occurenences?

My mother went through this when my little brother was confirmed, and ended up volunteering to teach the classes. Her observation was that a lot of these kids were just dropped off at Church - their parents weren't even attending mass regularly!

Anyway, in the end I think the hope my mother had (and I've heard this from others) was that the graces of confirmation would be efficacious anyway, and could, in the Divine Economy, maybe protect them a little over the next years to form their hearts to be receptive to Christ later.

I wish I really held much hope of that myself, but I'm inclined to agree that these kids should not be receiving confirmation - and that the parents should be made aware why, and that this is not merely an empty transition ritual, but a sacrament with real meaning. I don't think anyone should drift into confirmation any more than they should drift into ordination or marriage.

Sigh. But what can be done? These kids need better catechesis years earlier.
