I am a cheer mom in Iowa. Not only do I have a daughter who eats, sleeps and breathes cheerleading, but I am also a high school cheer coach. My daughter, Grace, is 17 and has cheered for both junior high and high school. She is currently cheering for high school basketball, both boys and girls and is a member of Elite Cheer in Omaha, NE. We live in SW Iowa and drive 1 1/2 hours each way to attend practices for her nationally competitive team. I am also a team mom for Elite and a room mom for nationals. So I take care of cheerleaders almost every day of the week. I love it! But....now she is graduating and there will be no more cheerleading :( I don't even know how I am going to handle myself :( I have to quit my coaching job to get a "real" job to help pay for college :( Maybe hearing about your lives and sharing tips and advice will help me cope!

You could adopt a little girl and enroll her in cheer... it would be great thing for that little girl and you wouls still have cheer in your life

Hey Emily,

Is your daughter interested in joining the college team at all? I joined my college cheer team and it was a blast. It was difficult raising my son, going to school full time, working two jobs, plus getting practice in there, but it was well worth it. I made so many life long friends that I probably would of never met if i hadn't joined the team. Its a great way to get involved with your college. My mom was still involved...she would come to my games and practice shows before competitions and help out with any activites we had going on. If you still want to keep up with the cheerleading have your daughter consider joining the cheer team...I know the coachs would love some help.

I have little ones, and many more years to go, but have you thought about volunteering? Our football league here has a cheer program for girls as young as kindergarten. They are always looking for experienced moms/coaches/assistants. The littlest ones are so cute, but they also need the most help (lack of attention, motor skill challenges, inexperienced moms).

Also, is your DD going to cheer in college? Is she going to school near home? I know it's not the same, but that may be something to take up your time. If your DD is going to community college, she can volunteer too.
