My daughter was diagnosed with apraxia she is three years old sometimes things come out right not very often the words she says correctly is yes momma and no she will try to say words but they don't come out right or sound even close or she just breaks down and cries or screams. We just started sign language last week and she is picking it up she knows already 10 signs. I need help what do you all do for the screaming and the frustration that your kids go through. I feel so bad for her and want to help her so much. We have been in speech therapy but only know since she is three they can diagnose her please help with any ideas that can help me out

Hello Laura,
I am a speech pathologist and I work with children just like your daughter. Here are some tips. You could make a picture book of her favorite things ( cut out pictures from magazine or find pictures on the internet). Use a different page for each category such as a drink page (ie water, milk. juice), a toy page ( ie puzzles, Lego, dolls). Show her how to point to the item that she wants. Say the word when she points so she can hear it but don't force her to say it. She can communicate by pointing to the picture to reduce her frustration. Her speech therapist will increase her sign language and introduce speech sounds, but this may give her an additional way to have her needs met at home for now. Best of luck. I hope this helps.
