My son will be 4 at the end of the month and will not sleep. Most nights he is up till at least 11pm or later and then he is up by 8am. I've tried not giving him naps, running out all of his energy everything i could think of and it still doesn't help. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help him sleep better??

My son sleeps at about 10-1030 pm and wakes up at 630 or 7 a.m. He is active all day and really has lots of energy. He also takes a nap in the early afternoon. He has been on a daily bedtime routine ever since he was a baby. He takes a warm bath, we read a book, and dim the lights. I've read that children who are overstimulated have a harder time falling asleep. Sometimes it's not really on the number of hours of sleep, but the quality of sleep itself. He wakes up refreshed and rested, then maybe he is doing well.

I've noticed with my daughter that if she hadn't had her afternoon nap that she will often go to bed much later and will be very restless, I think it is because they get over tired and stimulated. She is awake by 5:30 - 6:00 in the morning (wish she would sleep until a bit later)

I've noticed that my daughter needs the house to be quiet when she is trying to sleep. If the tv is on in the next room, it can take her forever to sleep.

Is he showing signs of fatigue??? Some children really need less sleep than others. Don't get too hung up in the numbers if he seems to be doing well.

Otherwise, try to make sure activities between supper and bedtime are as calming as possible (no tv, no computer). Dim the lights, play soothing music. Don't let him eat too much in the evening. Bananas and warm milk can help. And maybe try putting him down earlier rather than later. Often when children are overtired, it is hard for them to get to sleep.

Good luck!
