My 5 year old daughter, born on her Due Date - Jan 22, 2006 was DXed with Chronic Constipation in September of 2010. They RXed a laxative for her, but I don't like giving it to her, so we've been giving her bananas every morning and she somtimes will fight me on eating it, but I tell her it will make her tummy feel better. So she'll eat it for me.

Are there others out there who are going through the same issue as I am? If so, I could use more advice!

The bananas you are giving do contain potassium and to much potassium can cause constipation just like cheese. I would suggest trying activia yogurt, apples, fiber one bars, raisins. Anything high in fiber should work. My daughter has had chronic constipation since birth and has may tests run to find the problem yet after 5 years we do not know the cause. I give her tons of vegies and fruits instead of meds though when things get to bad I use miralax because it uses your own bodies water to solve the problem which I prefer so it is not as harsh on the system and the body wont depend on it over time to keep her going. Hope this helps.

Hi there...I know this is an older post, but I'm hoping this may be seen by other mothers who have issues with Chronic Constipation and maybe the issue of Encopresis. My daughter started becoming extrememly constipated when she was 4 and kept having accidents (soiling her undies) a few times a day and she was diagnosed as having encopresis. All the doctors did over the 4 years of visits, was tell us she needed more fiber, drink more water and take laxatives. Finally we realized that gluten (wheat products) may be to blame and we started giving her fruit flavored chewable probiotics on a daily basis and within 24 hours, her system got back on track and she had a massive bowel movement.

I started a blog for other moms who are going through this and frustrated and searching for answers. Bananas are not good for a constipated child by the way. It is good to keep them regular, but can hinder them getting there! Please visit my blog at www.momsguidetoencopresis.com to learn more. I'm not selling anything, just trying to educate and give hope to mom's who are going through the same thing I went through for 4 long years.

Have a great day,

Stephanie

We bought the twins gummy Fiber Vitamins. One a day with a glass of juice in the mornings has seemed to clear up their constipation.

Banana will make this worse. I agree with eveyone when they tell to cut down on the dairy. My son went through this for almost three years. We had to give him a liquid laxative daily for a really long time. We also found out he was iron deficient which will also cause this problem. (taking the iron makes them constipated) This complicated things too. It took almost three years for him to get over this problem, but now he's great. He's now 7 and has no problems. Listen to your doctor. Your child won't be on the laxative forever. Once he was doing really well, we slowly weaned him off the laxative and like I said before he has no problems now and it was four years ago. Good luck! :)

My 5 year old daughter also suffers from constipation, but never diagnosed. I have since changed her milk to Lactaid and am trying to giver her lots of water which she doesn't like. Do not give her bananas, try giving her prunes in the morning or as a snack for the day. My daughter is still not going everyday, but hopefully this change of diet will help. Good luck!

Bananas can make it worse!

One of the main ways to prevent and treat constipation is by modifying your child's diet. This includes decreasing foods that are constipating, including cow's milk, bananas, yogurt, cheese, cooked carrots and other foods that are low in fiber. For children that drink a lot of milk, soy milk is a good alternative, as it is usually much less constipating than cow's milk.

Another important dietary change is increasing the amount of fiber in your child's diet. How much fiber does your child need? The usual recommendation is that children should have 5-6 grams of fiber plus their age in years each day. So a 4 year old should have 9-10 grams of fiber each day.

Vegetables that are particularly high in fiber include beans, especially baked, kidney, navy, pinto and lima beans, sweet potatoes, peas, turnip greens and raw tomatoes.

Other foods that are good for children with constipation include vegetable soups (lots of fiber and added fluid), and popcorn. Extra bran can also be helpful, including bran cereals, bran muffins, shredded wheat, graham crackers, and whole wheat bread

And of course LOTS of fluids. Dehydration only makes constipation worse! My 6 yr old daughter got so constipated, she began vomiting and running fever. It was a very expensive enema in the ER! Now we give her half-cap full of Miralax a day. It is tasteless and will dissolve in anything.

My daughter Hannah had really bad constip. once. We gave her a stool softener for 2 weeks before it really started helping. Her constipation was worsened by eating bananas. We gave her apple (for fiber) and oranges. Orange juice, grape juice and apple juice, all helped. Lots of water also helps. Maybe use a child/infant suppository.
My daughter does not have chronic problems, but I know I used to have problems until I did an overhaul on my own diet. Good luck, and God bless you all.
